40 years ago, on July 1965, producer Gene Roddenberry filmed his second STAR TREK pilot, entitled "Where No Man Has Gone Before" at Desilu Studios. After the network rejected his first TREK pilot, called "The Cage" and starring Jeffrey Hunter as Captain Pike, Roddenberry, with the help of writer Samuel A. Peeples delivered a more action-oriented story in the second pilot, which introduced canadian-born actor William Shatner in the role of Captain James T. Kirk. NBC liked, and in January 1966, Roddenberry was notified of the network acceptance of the pilot.

According to author Allan Asherman in his The STAR TREK Compendium resource book, there are actually two different versions of "Where No Man Has Gone Before", only one of which has been televised and it is available on VHS and DVD. The unaired, extended version is the one that Gene Roddenberry submitted to NBC.

It began with a view of our galaxy, accompanied by William Shatner's voiceover introducing the starship mission, a narration not indicated as a Captain's Log entry.

The first interior scene was the chess game between Kirk and Spock (Leonard Nimoy). But when Kirk remarked how terrible it was that Spock had "bad blood" (human blood) in his veins, in the extended version the captain added "But you may learn to enjoy it some day".

When the disaster recorder materialized and began to flash off and on in the transporter room, the scene "froze" and, and over the picture the words STAR TREK appeared in pink letters trimmed in silver-blue. In the same block-lettering style, the words "Tonight's Episode : 'Where No Man Has Gone Before'" materialized as the opening theme was heard. This original theme music by Alexander Courage was not the same used in "The Cage" and during the series three seasons.

The original opening credits were very short and were followeb by a commercial break. The next lost scene consist of footage of the ship corridors in Red Alert, and introduced the rest of the main characters, including Lt. Gary Mitchel (Gary Lockwood), Doctor Mark Piper (Paul Fix) and Physicist Sulu (George Takei).

This version of the second TREK pilot was divided into four acts, with a prologue and a epilogue, unlike the first pilot and the series' episodes. The end credit were backed again by the alternate music theme, that was never heard again in STAR TREK. A fast-moving, almost cheerful eletronic melody, it accompanied the end credits that listed only the main actors.

Again we remind you that this extended version of "Where No Man Has Gone Before" never aired on TV, and it is not available on VHS and DVD, and was not include in Paramount's TOS Season 1 Box Set, but maybe you can download those rare scenes online for download.

I want to see Kirk and Spock one more time | Report this post to moderator

Wouldn't it be a great way to celebrate 40 years of ST and make a huge statement that Star Trek is not dead?

If Mr Berman is outthere please Bring back Kirk and Spock
one last time.

GET A LIFE,
will you people? I mean, for crying out loud, it's just a TV show!.... You've turned an enjoyable little job, that I did as a lark for a few years, into a COLOSSAL WASTE OF TIME! -- William Shatner on Saturday Night Live (1986)

It was available on one of those Brazilian Trek sites... I had downloaded it but lost those clips along with my other data when my laptop was stolen

TREY PARKER: And it comes from an honest belief we have, which is... George Bush doesn't know what's going on. Michael Moore does not know what's going on. And Alec Baldwin definitely does not know what's going on. Basically, this shit is gigantically complicated.

ORIGINAL "WHERE NO MAN" | Report this post to moderator
By: Nicholas Roche (Odo's file, contact, web site) @ 07:37:18 on Aug 05, 2005

Somehow or other, I wound up with a copy of this "original" version of WHERE NO MAN on VHS some time ago. I have no way currently of making a AVI or MPG copy of it, as my source for video dubbing is no longer available. But I DO know the episode is available.

I have a copy of that "original", too, but it's on Beta tape. I bought it from a video/audio memorabilia company here in California (but I no longer recommend that company anymore, because they didn't ship an order and then took a year to refund my money). The tape I have is "washed-out" because of multi-generational copying. But at least I have it! :-)

Would you be willing to copy the VHS on to a VHS? We could work something out if you wanted to. I would so love to see this copy of it. Thank you!

One of the best | Report this post to moderator

The second pilot episode is easily one of the best. It was terrifically written and at essence a tale of tragedy, where Kirk has to kill his best friend to save his ship (this was before McCoy was on ship and there are signs that Kirk and Spock's friendship is fresh).

Always one of my favorites.

I agree 100%. Where No Man Has Gone Before is classic television, not just classic Trek. Great acting, lots of action, a tragic story, really well defined characters and really good FX for its time.

What I find most amazing about this episode is the rapport the actors had with one another (especially Shatner, Lockwood and Nimoy). They're so comfortable in their roles you'd think they'd been working with one another for years.

I know a lot of people won't agree with me, but I never saw anything in the subsequent Trek shows that could top this episode dramatically.

Shatner had worked with Lockwood and with Nimoy had worked together in previous acting gigs.

You know what I've always loved about WNMHGB? The almost Shakespearean cadence and structure of the dialogue, especially at the end, in Kirk's impassioned pleas to Dehner's fading humanity, and in Mitchell's lines, which superbly showcase his towering hubris.

Great stuff. Still gives me chills to watch it.
