Manny Coto Reveals His Plans for ENTERPRISE Now Shelved Fifth Season

By GustavoLeao / 11:25, 9 June 2005 / Enterprise

The latest issue of STAR TREK Magazine, just out in the UK, features an exclusive interview with STAR TREK ENTERPRISE producer Manny Coto, Here are a few excerpts:

Coto revealed that had they got a fifth season, it would have followed directly on from the events in the two-parter episodes "Demons," and "Terra Prime" "If we had gotten a fifth season, it would have been about the real meat of the Federation being founded," he told the magazine. "I would have melded that to a bit of a return to the exploration theme of the show. We would have found new members to join the Federation and watched it come together in a series of episodes that would have spanned the entire season."

Coto said the fans would have the opportunity to see the floating city of Stratos, the Cloud City which was first introduced in THE ORIGINAL SERIES third season episode "The Cloud Minders". "Along with the Mirror Universe episodes, that was something I really wanted to do." he said "I hoped to do it this season, but we just ran out of episodes! It's a pity. That probably would have been the opener to Season Five. It breaks my heart."

About the show's cancellation, he said "STAR TREK has been around for 18 years in this incarnation and it's the same old [format] - we're on the Bridge, here's the captain and the same kind of crew composition and interactions. When something fresher comes along like the new BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, I can see the urge to tune in and see what else is new out there."

More from Coto can be found at Sci Fi Pulse.

I agree completely with the notion that the next show needs characters evolving and even leaving the show. I also believe in arcs that grow gradually over a period of seasons. What I do not agree with is the that this can't be done on the Titan. As much as people didn't like seeing Troi and Riker on Enterprise, I believe Jonathan Frakes could carry a show and do it well (I'll probably get chewed out for that opinion). I DO think the show needs to get a little more griddy in terms of characterization and plot. No more EARTH IS AT STAKE stuff, but real geo-political (universe-political) implications behind things. Really play on themes that are happening in the world right now. I think that's what people want at the moment. Or at least, that's what I would like to see.
