TrekWeb received the following press release from former STAR TREK ENTERPRISE visual effects house Eden FX. According to the press release, they will provide FX work for producer Brannon Braga upcoming science-fiction series, THRESHOLD.

EDEN PROVIDES VISUAL EFFECTS FOR 6 PILOTS

Hollywood, CA, May 19, 2005. Eden FX, which specializes in the design and production of visual effects work for all facets of the entertainment industry, recently provided CG effects for six television pilots: FATHOM and NY-70 for NBC, THRESHOLD and THE UNIT for CBS, and COMMANDER IN CHIEF and THE CATCH for ABC.

Four of the pilots, FATHOM, THRESHOLD, THE UNIT and COMMANDER IN CHIEF have been picked up to series.

"The effects we did were quite challenging and varied. They ranged from creature and water creation to photo realistic models of cars, ships and planes as well as matte paintings and set extensions" noted John Gross, Co-President/Creative Director, Eden FX. "We managed to deliver over 200 shots in a little under 6 weeks time while continuing to produce visual effects for our ongoing series work which includes ALIAS, LOST, MEDIUM, JAG, NAVY NCIS, ENTERPRISE, SIX FEET UNDER, and NUMB3RS."

"This was the largest amount of pilots that we have done in one season" added Mark Miller, Co-President, Eden FX, and we were really pleased how well everything went. It really is a credit to our incredibly talented and experienced staff and to the organization of our infrastructure which enables us to add additional equipment and artists quickly and seamlessly."

CHUCK is a one-hour, action-comedy series that follows Chuck Bartowski (Zachary Levi, "Less Than Perfect") -- a computer geek who is catapulted into a new career as the government's most vital secret agent. This upcoming season will include some special guest stars, including Brandon Routh of "Superman Returns" who will play CIA agent Daniel Shaw in an episode, and the addition of SUBWAY restaurant as a major advertiser to the show. Chuck averaged a 4.0/6 rating last season, about eight percent better than the recently cancelled "Trauma". Ratings-challenged Heroes moves back an hour when Chuck returns on Monday nights. Visual effects are a wonderful thing, but they as we have all learned from Enterprise and the Star Wars Prequels, they CANNOT replace good story and drama. In fact, I think they stick out more when the story is bad. For example, because Episodes I and II lacked a good story, I became bothered by the over-abundance of 'fake' rooms and sets. However in Episode III, the drama and story was better, and my brain chose to ignore the fake-ness of it all because they were merely vehicles to carry the good story. (I apologize for the Star Wars references on a Star Trek site, but I wanted to hit the point home). Same applies to Enterprise. The VFX were awesome throughout the entire series, except for the last season which had noticeable cut backs in the cgi rendering department. But who cares? The drama sucked! A series that blended the two perfectly was.... You guessed it. Deep Space Nine. Does anyone know if its airing on Spike TV is attracting new viewership to the series? They air the show twice a day at noon and one o'clock. Although those times are less than stellar, it's perfect for someone like me with a TiVo.
