The latest issue of Cinefantastique magazine, just out in the US, features an exclusive interview with STAR TREK ENTERPRISE producer Manny Coto, in which he again talks about the show's cancellation. Here are a few excerpts :

"When I went into this season knowing we were moved to Fridays and the budget had been reduced and there was no promotion, the handwriting was kind of on the wall" he told journalist Jeff Bond "But it is sad because what we did this season was only the tip of the iceberg of what we could have done."

"My guess is that in two years some hot new show runner, someone who is popular and has established hits, will come to Paramount and say they want to do a STAR TREK series and Paramount will say terrific." Coto said "Because STAR TREK is such an enticing brand name that there are very few people out there who would not want to do it; anyone of the people running the hot action or hot sci-fi series out there would die to do a STAR TREK series and in two or three years that opportunity will be open."

Yeah, I bet UPN will want a new Trek series... | Report this post to moderator

UPN will want a new Trek series here in a couple of years to pull their shitty network out of the ratings hole that they are digging for themselves. Personally, I want the new Trek series where it belongs... in syndication! Screw UPN!

Signs Paramount is going in the right direction | Report this post to moderator

Because in 2 years or so Rick Berman's contract is done and the position is open. A current executive producer implying that a new Star Trek project will have a new showrunner (for those unclear about Hollywood terms, showrunner = executive producer) is another sign that the Berman era has mercifily come to an end.

Paramount is waiting out Berman's contract, and there will be no Berman produced Star Trek XI (thank God). The next Star Trek project, TV or film, will begin just as soon as a replacement for Berman is found, probably early 2007 just after his contract ends.

Until then, enjoy Trek reruns, BSG, Alias, 24, and the other really good shows out there right now.

Hot new series runner? | Report this post to moderator
By: slapynutz (Odo's file, contact) @ 16:20:23 on Apr 17, 2005 | Edit History (1)

Does he mean like J.J. Abrams? In a couple years, with Lost in season 3 and underway, and Alias likely ending (or cancelled), he'd probably be right for the post.

My only hesitation is the "reimagining" he did to Superman in his original Superman script ... ugh.

Based on his comments in the other article on Trekweb, I think he means Manny Coto..

I doubt Alias will be ending after it's already announced 5th season. The first half of this season was "dumbed down" to allow new readers to catch up and figure out what's going on. Did you watch "Nightengale" last week and "Pandora" this week? It's easy to say the show is not going to survive next season right now, but I'll judge that after I've seen the entire 4th season. I have a feeling these final 6 or 7 episodes are going to be typical "old-school" Alias type episodes. The show brings in 3X the number of viewers Enterprise brought in on average, and once the episodes go into more old Alias type stories with the cliffhanger endings and major twists and turns (like Pandora's final scene) I think it'll actually get about the same level of ratings as "Lost" gets, which will make it an unqualified hit (which even right now ABC is saying it is).

I don't know if JJ is who Coto is talking about. I think, considering he's going to be working on 24, he's hoping that will put his own star on the rise, so in a few years he could be exactly who he's talking about. A bit of foreshadowing his own plans I think. Also, he has undoubtedly heard, since we all did, that JMS had pitched a Star Trek idea to Paramount. That also could be who he's talking about.

Agree. I dunno but I think Coto is talking about himself. He is the new executive producer on 24 after all.

What I think Coto means is that someone with a successful series might come back. Like say Ronald Moore! Maybe, Piller. But Abrams might have a good twist to throw in. But my money is on Coto and Moore teaming up, and cleaning house.

The bottom line is that Trek will not be around.
I Blame B&B for the Drawn out Temperoral Cold War. But in the long run I think a lot of fans were like "I'll catch this season in reruns or when they syndicate it." So a lot of blame does go to the fans too. There are things that keep us from watching our favorite shows. But things happen.
So not enough people watched the show towards the end. It happens.
Enterprise had a good run, now it takes a rest.
The future series could be better written and character driven. Only time will tell.

Amen to that. That's the only way a new series is going to survive and bring in viewers, if people care about the characters. That's part of what makes "Lost", "Alias", and "24" so successful.

And guess what? All three series have strong ensemble casts. Sure, 24 is all about Jack Bauer, but he can't be in every minute of that hour and without the strong sub plots going on around him the show would fail.
