Manny Coto Plans TREK Pitch to Paramount

Features

By TRexx / 03:22, 16 April 2005 / General Star Trek

"ENTERPRISE executive producer Manny Coto, who won praise this season from fans previously disappointed with the TREK prequel ENTERPRISE, said he has a proposal for another STAR TREK series. He said he plans to wait a while and then pitch his idea to Paramount Pictures. For now, he's preparing to join the Fox real-time drama '24' as a producer," writes Dave Mason for the Ventura County Star.

"I'm not going to pitch it here," coyed Coto at the ENTERPRISE wrap party.

Rick Berman, executive producer and co-creator of ENTERPRISE with Brannon Braga, confirmed the beginnings of a story for the eleventh STAR TREK movie, but said it's too early to discuss the details.

Read the complete report at The News Tribune.

"I would love to be attached to a future STAR TREK series," Coto told IESB's Robert Sanchez in a separate interview at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. "I've always been a STAR TREK fan. I've been a STAR TREK fan since I was a small child. So, if there is a next incarnation, and I'm sure there will be, I would love nothing more than to be a part of it." How long before the next series happens? "I would guess two or three years." Which era might it portray? "If I had to guess, I would guess that they're going to probably go forward, into the next NEXT GENERATION. The post Picard era. That's what I would do."

First of all, anyone would have to be an idiot to not be able to see what Coto has done with the disaster that was Enterprise. People like Coto because for many fans, he has made Star Trek fun again. I'm not 100% happy with everything he's done, but I'm mostly happy with what I've seen, and when faced with the prospect of any more Star Trek being solely handled by Berman, I get ill. The reason ENT seems like a fanboy excercise is because he salvaged what was wrecked previously on Enterprise. If ENT had gotten a fifth season, I doubt that it would have been so heavy on the fanboy stuff, sprinkling smaller references here and there.

Enterprise shows and films need to head into unfamiliar territory more often. The past series have delved into a recycled mentality. And while it's true that there are not an endless supply of story ideas, they do have the benefit of being able to connect to already known facts from the other shows that can make events have a little more relevance, either to the series, or our experience of real life. For instance, "Let That Be Your Last Battlefield" still holds relevance. Yes, the makeup needs to be readdressed on that one, but the story is still very timely.

But you are right. There needs to be less quantity of Trek, and more quality. It's as if B&B were afraid that if they don't produce anything for a year that they would dry up and disappear, so they did the opposite, they flooded and saturated us with Star Trek on a non-stop basis. In their foolishness, they caused the fans to become hypercritical, and since there was so much material to be judged, they did themselves in this way. They gave bullets to the firing squad, so to speak. The Star Wars franchise was a bit smarter about it all. Although there is a lot of Star Wars material, they have done better by pacing themselves and acquiring smart licensing avenues and promotional opportunities.

Paramount would do well to keep any future Star Trek off of UPN. I wouldn't be surprised to find an army of monkeys with down's syndrome running the place judging by the way they conduct their business. Trek would do better on CBS or some other outlet.

And regarding Coto, I don't think we really got a fair chance to see what he can do, this was the tip of the iceberg and he was working with damaged goods. If he can fix what was so horribly broken, imagine what he could do with TREK unburdened by the constraints of two men who (in my opinion) can't tell the difference between their asses and a hole in the ground.

But there is some wisdom in what you say, I think we both agree that there is an issue with oversaturation. Trek needs a rest and a change-up in TPTB.

--------

To me, truth is not some vague, foggy notion. Truth is real. And, at the same time, unreal. Fiction and fact and everything in between, plus some things I can't remember, all rolled into one big 'thing.' This is truth, to me.

1. DS9 was a great show. Don't know what you're complaining about.
2. Coto has done some great stuff this season. If he had been involved from the start I think ENTERPRISE could have been a very fun and involving show. But even at that, he's writing for someone else's premise and someone else's characters. The prequel thing probably, and it seems won't be, HIS premise. That's great with me.
3. Saying Star Trek can no longer exist as a TV show is ridiculous. The medium isn't the issue. It's the show. It's the writing, the direction, the characters, etc. And 2 or 3 years might be plenty of time if television remains as crappy as it is now. But only if a new Star Trek show is a good show, period.
