Manny Coto Plans TREK Pitch to Paramount

Features

By TRexx / 03:22, 16 April 2005 / General Star Trek

"ENTERPRISE executive producer Manny Coto, who won praise this season from fans previously disappointed with the TREK prequel ENTERPRISE, said he has a proposal for another STAR TREK series. He said he plans to wait a while and then pitch his idea to Paramount Pictures. For now, he's preparing to join the Fox real-time drama '24' as a producer," writes Dave Mason for the Ventura County Star.

"I'm not going to pitch it here," coyed Coto at the ENTERPRISE wrap party.

Rick Berman, executive producer and co-creator of ENTERPRISE with Brannon Braga, confirmed the beginnings of a story for the eleventh STAR TREK movie, but said it's too early to discuss the details.

Read the complete report at The News Tribune.

"I would love to be attached to a future STAR TREK series," Coto told IESB's Robert Sanchez in a separate interview at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. "I've always been a STAR TREK fan. I've been a STAR TREK fan since I was a small child. So, if there is a next incarnation, and I'm sure there will be, I would love nothing more than to be a part of it." How long before the next series happens? "I would guess two or three years." Which era might it portray? "If I had to guess, I would guess that they're going to probably go forward, into the next NEXT GENERATION. The post Picard era. That's what I would do."

I have to disagree. Yes, JMS is very egotistical. And there is a lot of bad blood because of the perceived similarities between DS9 and Babylon 5. But in all honesty, do you really think that Berman and Braga recognize DS9 as the great series it was? No. It made them look bad and they tend to ignore it. Also, from rumours I heard, Avery Brooks and Rick Berman do not get along so that's probably another facet of the whole thing.

JMS would not ignore DS9. He wouldn't ignore Voyager, or The Next Generation or even Enterprise. The thing is, we don't know what his premise was. But I am of the opinion that whatever his idea was, it wouldn't be tied to ANY of the previous series, let alone DS9. He'd acknowledge that they happened, but I wouldn't be looking for a cameo by Captain Janeway or Chief O'Brien. I think his series would stand on its own, and not use the "guest star" gimmick ratings grab that was prevailant during the Berman and Braga era.

JMS would bring a complete story to the table. Continuity within the series, much like DS9 had and both Voyager and Enterprise lacked. My only concern with Coto is the idea that it would be filled with "continuity porn" all the time. Like a fanboy writing where every episode has to have some tie to TOS, and no original plots being developed. Although I've also put forth the theory that Coto's constant references to TOS is simply because Berman and Braga told him early on that this would probably be the last year and to just go out and have fun and do whatever the f*ck he wanted. If in a few years, Coto put forth a series, and the premise sounded good, I'd be all for it. JMS, Coto, it really doesn't matter.

As long as Berman isn't anywhere near it, I'll be happy.
