STAR TREK actor Walter Koenig will reprise his role as 'Pavel Chekov' in the upcoming fourth episode the online series, STAR TREK NEW VOYAGES, a fan-made continuation of Captain Kirk's initial five year mission. The episode, titled "New Voyages Episode 404", will be written by TOS writer D.C. Fontana.

"I had pretty well determined that STAR TREK and 'Chekov' were part of my past. I mean, who wouldn't, it's been nearly forty years since my first "Warp factor four, Keptin". said Koenig "But then the folks from NEW VOYAGES approached and we started kicking around ideas for a 'Chekov' story. It occurred to me that what we were coming up with was what every actor dreams of: a second chance to get it right. An opportunity not only to resurrect a role, but to make of that character a living breathing profoundly human - being. It is almost beyond comprehension that this is happening so late in my life! Talk about belated reward, talk about closure, talk about science fiction! I didn't believe I could ever again be this excited about performing a part. I guess it isn't so trite after all: perhaps, all good things do come to those who wait."

NEW VOYAGES appeared on the internet in January 17th 2004 with a second installment being released October 8th 2004. With over 16 million downloads to date, NEW VOYAGES continues the missions of the original Enterprise with new actors playing the legendary characters of Captain Kirk, Mister Spock and Doctor McCoy. NEW VOYAGES was created and is Produced by James Cawley and Jack Marshall with Producer Max Rem, Visual Effects creator, and Consulting Producer, Eugene Roddenberry, Jr, son of the late Star Trek Creator, Gene Roddenberry.

This series is utter shite. The acting is absolutely wooden. It is even worse than soaps. Why do they insist on creating more TOS-era episodes? TOS was a unique formula which coincidentaly came together at the time in the 60's to produce the finished product. This includes, dialogue, language, culture of the show etc, which just doesn't fit in, in today's world. Things have changed since the 60's.

However, watching TOS today is a different matter as you are transported into "that world" when you sit down to watch an episode. But creating TOS-like episodes todays produces non-sense.

Is this the show with the kirk who was an elvis impersonator? | Report this post to moderator

I saw this on access tv here in Austin once, and it was fairly interesting. I looked up some info and it said that this dude was an elvis impersonator and he built the TOS sets in his spare time or something. Is this the same thing?

Yes indeed. You can tell from the hair, although it was toned down in episode two. Ep 3 is being written by the DS9 writer who wrote "Children Of Time" and I think "Little Green Men".

At the end of the episode with Chekov, it will be revealed to be the holodeck from Relics, and Scotty will exit the holo-bridge revealing that New Voyages was never real!

If Ep 4 is out on say, 9/8/06 it will be a sweet celebration of Trek's 40th anniversary. Especially if it's featuring Walter and it's written by D.C. Fontana!! I'm just too overwhelmed. This has definitely helped lessen the pain of losing Enterprise just as it was hitting its stride.

I'm guessing Paramount is turning a blind eye to this, as well as "Hidden Frontiers," "Starship Exeter," and any other fan-made Trek that's out there. The reason? Nobody makes any money off of it.

There's a provision in the Copyright Act that discusses "fair use." I would imagine that these folks have at least looked into the relevant copyright laws before embarking on such an endeavor. If they haven't, then they're just lucky so far.

Granted, all of the characters and names (Enterprise, Kirk, Spock, Starfleet, Federation, et.al.) are trademarks of Paramount Pictures Corp. But I'm sure there are provisions in the copyright or trademark laws that allow for the "fair use" of such trademarks without obtaining a license for their use. Infringing on those trademarks would mean that they are actually selling these fan films for profit.

Plus, with the Roddenberry name backing them (although the Roddenberry estate holds no ownership rights), I'm pretty certain Paramount doesn't want the huge PR firestorm that closing down that production would result in. Rather than stifling them, it would simply lead to more fan films, as people thumb their noses at the studio...and interest in "officially-produced" Trek would drop through the floor.

No, it's actually in Paramount's best interests to allow these productions to continue, and to flourish...because it means potential interest in new "official" Trek down the road, and that translates into bucks. (If it's done well.)

Given the impact these stories are having, Paramount should make this official and LICENSE the rights to these guys. LET them make money. By doing this, they would be able to go out and get investors. That could increase the budget and perhaps even involve a release beyond that of the internet. Paramount's incentive is that they would get a percentage of whatever gross they make with little to no risk.

What they have here is VERY impressive. You have TOS actors, TOS writers, DS9 writers, and more. They've already recast Scotty and Chekov. Eventually the whole cast can change over to more polished actors and things can really cook.

      It DESERVES Paramount's support.

        "It DESERVES Paramount's support."

So does ENT, given the fourth season.

Actually they do have a young Chekov. He was in the first 2 episodes, but they just recast the part. There must be something involving movie era Chekov which is how Koenig will be written in. I hope he has an active role, and is not just sage older Chekov reminiscing about his days on the NCC-1701.

The new young Chekov actually has a decent resume, and LOOKS the part. I wouldn't be surprised to eventually see all the roles recast as this project gains steam.

This is truly amazing. I couldn't care less about Trek XI as currently is being done, but this is exciting.

By: Avilos (Odo's file, contact) @ 17:45:47 on Mar 09, 2005

I wonder how they are able to do this given copyright issues. It is one thing to have other actors playing the characters but to having Koenig playing Chekov it is REALLY CHEKOV! You would think Paramount would be concerned with this. Because if one cast member why not more and more. Similar to this I just saw a Lego styled CGI Batman film made by some animation students. Adam West voices Batman and Mark Hamill the Joker.

Maybe TrekUnited should just use the money raised to make an Enteprise fanfilm staring the actual actors. Sure it is unlikely but all of this opens some interesting possiblities!

creative alternatives | Report this post to moderator
By: Gary P (Odo's file, contact) @ 16:21:14 on Mar 09, 2005

I think this is great. It is also, if I may be so bold, truly a stepping stone for the internet. I think we can all agree there is a correlation between Science Fiction fans and harnessing new technology. New Voyages is a wonderful example of this relationship. While 'Corporate' Trek is in hibernation mode, let's rejoice in the fan effort, enthusiasm and EMPOWERMENT that are The New Voyages. Developing creative alternatives, whether they are successful or not, is a thousand times more powerful than postings calling Brannon Braga a hack. . . . . Even though he IS a hack, that prick.

Let's see. They have a MAJOR TOS actor. They have the greatest living Trek writer in DC Fontana. They are starting to recast with actors with real resumes.

    Their set is great.

They are endorsed by the RODDENBERRY family.

This is becoming real Star Trek. Who cares about some movie written by some guy that isn't even a Trek fan who doesn't even realize that 160 years before Kirk is WELL before Archer and about 60 years before the Romulan War?

I'll even point out that New Voyages considers the BBK trailer to be part of their storyline, and alluded to it twice. They even realize that Generations was a dumb end for Kirk, and who knows? Maybe THEY will do a Kirk returns storyline.

I can't wait for the Fontana penned episode.

I agree. I liked "In Harm's Way" so much that I made a VCD out of it. Now DC Fontana and Walter are going to be a part of it. I would say these folks are in for a growth spurt.

      Long live TOS!
