No Plans for STAR TREK Animated Series on DVD in Near Future?

Features

By BWilliams / 11:16, 8 February 2005 / General Star Trek

The latest word on the status of STAR TREK: The Animated Series is that it is very likely not to see its release on DVD in the near future from Paramount Home Entertainment, according to Pocket Books writer Kevin Dilmore. Further reports of a March 15 DVD release date have also been pegged down as rumor, based on sources close to Dilmore.

In a post on the PsiPhi BBS dated February 6, Dilmore wrote, "I had an e-mail exchange a couple of weeks ago with a pair of people who I consider to be the authorities on this subject. Here's what I was told.

"I checked in with Martin Blythe of Paramount Home Entertainment (who is no longer with PHE as of a few days ago), who said that Paramount had no plans for TAS on DVD. Period. he went on specifically to say that a release date of March 15 that had been circulating through various Internet news reports was strictly rumor.

"David Lambert, a contributor and reviewer for the wonderful web site TV Shows on DVD, was quick to remind me that the talk regarding a TAS release on DVD cited Columbia House, not PHE, as the company responsible for the release. That noted, he said that he had not been able to confirm the release at all, let alone one on March 15, from anyone at Columbia House.

"So, there you have it. Trust me, I'm trying to keep an eagle-eye on this because I very much want to write this event up for the (STAR TREK) Communicator. However, I can't be everywhere. I recommend that anyone interested keep checking in with TV Shows on DVD for the latest scoop (not just on this but on ANY TV-related DVD releases). That's where I look."

You can read Dilmore's original post here.

Dayton Ward, who has co-authored a number of TREK novels along with Kevin Dilmore, has also reported that the animated TREK series may not be released on DVD.

"Anything you've heard about Paramount and TAS DVDs is unsubstantiated rumor," Ward said on the PsiPhi BBS. "Paramount Home Video never released any info that they were planning a DVD release of the series, and Kevin Dilmore confirmed with one of their reps that the March 15th release date was a rumor put out by somebody else. They have no immediate plans to release TAS, as their TREK priorities at the moment are on finishing out the 'collector's editions' of the movies and ENTERPRISE season sets."

Please bear in mind that official word from Paramount has yet to be released regarding the status of TAS on DVD.

This upcoming season will include some special guest stars, including Brandon Routh of "Superman Returns" who will play CIA agent Daniel Shaw in an episode, and the addition of SUBWAY restaurant as a major advertiser to the show. Chuck averaged a 4.0/6 rating last season, about eight percent better than the recently cancelled "Trauma". Ratings-challenged Heroes moves back an hour when Chuck returns on Monday nights. To be honest, I don't know if the PAL/NTSC standards will be the same or different. I got a little confused at the start of the debate about HD TV because HD was simply being used as an abbreviation for "High Definition", in whatever form. It didn't necessarily refer to the HD standard used in the US. As I recall, some years go there was a lot of debate over which system should be used and the US jumped the gun and went ahead with HDTV. I don't know if the rest of the world decided to follow the US' lead, or if other standards were adopted.
