First Photos From Special Sets Built For "In a Mirror, Darkly" (SPOILERS)

Features

By Steve Krutzler / 17:31, 25 January 2005 / Enterprise

As previously reported, "In a Mirror, Darkly" will take STAR TREK: ENTERPRISE into the mirror universe first visited in ST:TOS's "Mirror, Mirror." Many fan films in recent years have revisted the classic TREK era and now ENTERPRISE is about to venture back to the future itself. Large portions of these episodes will involve action on the U.S.S. Defiant from the TOS episode "The Tholian Web," which apparently arrived in the 22nd century mirror universe when it vanished in the classic episode.

As a Constitution Class ship, the Defiant was identical to the classic Starship Enterprise, and the ENTERPRISE production team has been tasked with recreating many sets. The episodes began production this week at Paramount and SaveEnterprise.com has published several photographs fresh from the lot.

SaveEnterprise urges all fans to express their support for the fifth STAR TREK series in letters to UPN and CBS president Leslie Moonves, and to contribute to the group's efforts to raise money to place a USA Today ad showing fan support for a fifth season of the show. You can write Moonves at:

wouldn't it have made more sense to use the bridge designs from Star Trek's II/III?

I guess what I'm saying is, just as Klingon ridges are generally accepted as just being makeup improvements, surely the appearance of the ships internally can also be accepted as better production and increased budgets.

We actually see the bridge of the Defiant in "The Tholian Web, which takes place after the Defiant had it's rendevouz with Archer. No, it wouldn't make sense that the ship had the old designed bridge, then traveled to Archer's time and got a refit... Unless you just chalk it up to a side effect of the mirror universe.

Okay, let me say this, I think the sets look fabulous, there's no doubt in my mind that a lot of effort went into creating them... but... given the way this prequel looks, visually (and the acknowledged break with consistancy in so far as how the interior of the ship looks so much more advanced than the interior of the TOS Enterprise), wouldn't it have made more sense to use the bridge designs from Star Trek's II/III?

I'm no expert at Trek history, but as far as I know there wasn't much explanation given for why the bridge changed so drastically between TOS, TMP, and Star Trek II. (I think TMP was after a refit, so there was some explanation there, but Star Trek II didn't seem to justify the changes made there).

I guess what I'm saying is, just as Klingon ridges are generally accepted as just being makeup improvements, surely the appearance of the ships internally can also be accepted as better production and increased budgets.

Regardless, I think these will be some fun episodes, they certainly sound interesting.

Couldn't we just say it was a weird phase in ship building? Maybe during that time it was the style to have "Retro" buttons and knobs and they decided that since that's what everyone liked they would try it in a starship.

IN ST: TMP it's explained that the Enterprise was refitted from bow to stern. In ST: TWOK it's the same bridge but with the science station off to Kirk's right. Why? Better for blocking and framing shots since the science station was directly behind Kirk in TMP.

The bridge set, as well as all other TMP sets, were used in the first four films with many later redressed as sets for TNG (the bridge, sick bay, Kirks quarters, ships corridors, transporter room and others).

Actually, the ENTERPRISE was going through a refit in ST: II. The cadets were the one refitting it for their training cruise...kinda like on hand school situation...
