The VOYAGER Relaunch Continues in Christie Golden's Latest, ENEMY OF MY ENEMY

Features

By BWilliams / 00:04, 22 January 2005 / Reviews - Books

Previously, Christie Golden had launched the starship Voyager, under the command of Captain Chakotay, into new adventures in OLD WOUNDS, the first part of the two-book story SPIRIT WALK. We had been introduced to a new crew, including Chakotay's sister Sekaya, his new first officer Commander Andrew Ellis, and other major crewmembers. Now, Golden continues the story in ENEMY OF MY ENEMY, and picks up where she left off at the end of OLD WOUNDS with a number of major twists and turns in store for the Voyager crew.

I have to admit, the previous volume OLD WOUNDS felt like it proceeded at a very leisurely pace, as all of the characters were introduced to the story. I hadn't had that kind of feeling in quite a long time. But needless to say, the story picked up at the very end of the book, and it's this sense of urgency that Golden brings to ENEMY OF MY ENEMY.

The strength of ENEMY OF MY ENEMY lies in the in-depth characterization Golden brings to each of the VOYAGER cast members old and new, including Chakotay, Sekaya, Ellis, and the rest of the crew. It also marks the return of one of the more interesting villains to grace VOYAGER during its seven-year run, that of Crell Moset from the fifth season episode "Nothing Human", as his character is continually fleshed out and his villainous nature further examined. We learn some extremely important facts about one of the characters that, without spoiling too much plot information, significantly add to the character strengths and also to the changing mood and mounting action that spill out in this second volume.

At this point I must say it's completely impossible to talk further about the plot of ENEMY OF MY ENEMY without spoiling the entire story or even hitting significant highlights at best. But let me just offer this up: if you remember the DS9 episode "Apocalypse Rising", you will know exactly what this novel involves and the specific threat the Voyager crew must face. Golden keeps things moving along at a brisk pace, setting up threads of sabotage and conspiracy within Voyager's ranks and culminating in some shocking revelations.

Where OLD WOUNDS felt like a leisurely Sunday afternoon drive, ENEMY OF MY ENEMY is more like rush hour at 8:00 in the morning. It picks up speed and delivers what it promises by book's end. And as with the previous two-part story Christie Golden successfully pulls it all together in the second book of the two-part tale and sets up future stories to come in the VOYAGER re-launch.

Actually, the DS9 episode to which you're referring is "Apocalypse Rising", not "Armageddon Rising", IIRC.
