Rick Berman Concedes Retrograde Motion on 11th TREK Feature Film In Latest "Update"

Features

By Steve Krutzler / 02:34, 8 January 2005 / Star Trek: Nemesis

Speaking in the new issue of the STAR TREK Communicator, producer Rick Berman seems to confirm recent rumors of a possible delay in the previously discussed "prequel" feature film in development as an eleventh TREK pic. Speaking with Dan Madsen, Berman carefully admits the project's development has slowed.

"We are continuing to develop a project that is in the very early stages," he says in issue #154 with Brent Spiner ('Data', 'Arik Soong') on the cover. "It is in a little less of an early stage than it was the last time we spoke, but it is still too early to discuss it. I think there will be some discussion about it in the next couple of months. There is movement."

But whether that movement is forward or backwards Berman is silent on. With the naming of new Paramount studio chief Brad Grey, the future of STAR TREK feature films may be unknown for at least the immediate future. On the subject of ENTERPRISE, Berman admits ratings aren't as good as they'd hope for but that the show is holding its own on Friday nights.

"The fans have spoken highly of the show this season, which is very encouraging to us, but the ratings don't reflect that, unfortunately," he says. "As to whether UPN is going to be interested in doing the fifth season--that is something we will find out about in the spring (note that this interview was conducted just before the 2004 December holidays).

Berman says, however, that he believes a decision on the show's future may be known in time to plan the final episodes of the season. On the writing front, Berman is quick dispell rumors that he or partner Brannon Braga are taking any less of an active role in the show this season, despite the promotion of Manny Coto to showrunner and executive producer.

"The fact that Manny has taken a stronger role in the writing has not affected, in any way, my participation in the stories and editing and production," he says. "Brannon is also still actively involved in the series. It always amuses me when I read about people's perception about all of this. The fact that Manny has taken more of a responsible roel in the story development area doesn't mean what most people think it means. This is still a very collaborative effort, and Brannon's and my involvement is still extremely strong. It always has been. It's not a question of one person's vision versus another's. It is a group effort, and it always has been a group effort."

Berman also hints at upcoming changes for Dominic Keating's character 'Malcolm Reed' in the full interview. This issue of the magazine also features interviews with Brent Spiner and remarks by writer/producer Mike Sussman.

You can look for the new Communicator in your mailbox soon or on newsstands in the U.S.

Nov 23Chuck returns to NBC with a special two-hour show on Sunday, Jan 10, 2010, before returning to its regular time slot, Mondays at 8pm on the following night. It's return to prime time television can be attributed to a successful fan renewnal campaign last year. CHUCK is a one-hour, action-comedy series that follows Chuck Bartowski (Zachary Levi, "Less Than Perfect") -- a computer geek who is catapulted into a new career as the government's most vital secret agent. This upcoming season will include some special guest stars, including Brandon Routh of "Superman Returns" who will play CIA agent Daniel Shaw in an episode, and the addition of SUBWAY restaurant as a major advertiser to the show. Chuck averaged a 4.0/6 rating last season, about eight percent better than the recently cancelled "Trauma". Ratings-challenged Heroes moves back an hour when Chuck returns on Monday nights. More sweeping generalisations with little regard for particulars or evidence delivered with such venom as to render any grain of argumentative integrity moot.

A translation to Berman's quotes : "Paramount isn't all very pleased."

Given the state of the studio's fortunes and the change in leadership, the most likely option is: no STAR TREK movie at all for quite a while, I think.

OUCH! Scorned, that was mighty harsh. And in the words of Picard, "nicely done!" I would agree that Berman is generalizing, talking much and saying little. He is hiding from the truth.

I wonder how often Berman and Braga attend the Conventions, and if they do whether or not they even speak at them?
