Attack of the Smooth-Heads! "Affliction" Kicks Off Two-Parter - Production Report (SPOILERS)

Features

By Steve Krutzler / 10:21, 17 December 2004 / Enterprise

The official STAR TREK web site has published its production report for "Affliction," the first of a two-part Klingon arc explaining how the Klingon make-up changed between STAR TREK: TOS and STAR TREK: TMP, as previously revealed here at TrekWeb. The episode will also see the return of several TREK veteran guest actors, including STAR TREK IV and VI's John Schuck ('Klingon Ambassador').

"To briefly synopsize the story, Enterprise heads back to Earth for the official launch of the Columbia NX-02, commanded by Erika Hernandez," writes the site. "After visiting his favorite Chinese restaurant in San Francisco, Phlox is abducted by aliens (Rigelians, actually). He finds himself in the presence of Klingons who tell him the Empire is facing its gravest threat in centuries. Along the way, as Archer and company investigate and pursue, it's revealed that one of our main characters has a secret past which comes into play."

The report indicates that the script, by producer Mike Sussman, takes into account all the Klingon make-up continuity issues, such as the resurrection of "smooth-headed" Klingon characteres from TOS on several episodes of DEEP SPACE NINE as "ridge-heads." DS9's "Trials and Tribble-ations" also had 'Bashir' and 'O'Brien' surprised at the look at smooth-heads and 'Worf' acknowledging some sort of secret about the issue.

Schuck will play a Klingon scientist in this episode named 'Antaak', and joined by a 'Klingon Prisoner' played by DS9's 'Alexander Roshenko', Marc Worden. FAMILY GUY creator and TREK fan Seth MacFarlane reprises his cameo role as an engineer from last season's "The Forgotten," now with a name 'Ensign Rivers' and a posting on the NX-02 Columbia.

The report reveals that indeed we'll see four "smooth-head" Klingons, referred to in the script as "type-two" or "semi-Klingons." The guest cast is rounded out by some Rigelian kidnappers.

"Affliction" was directed by Michael Grossman ("The Forge") and will air February 18th. The conclusion, "Divergence," written by Judity and Garfield Reeves-Stevens, is currently in production. Today, Friday, December 17th, is the last day of production until Monday, January 3rd.

"How will they get around the issue that Kang, Kor and Koloth were smoothheads in the Original Series and ridgeheads in the DS9/Voyager episodes they appeared in."

According to the report, that is being taken into consideration.

"The report indicates that the script, by producer Mike Sussman, takes into account all the Klingon make-up continuity issues, such as the resurrection of "smooth-headed" Klingon characteres from TOS on several episodes of DEEP SPACE NINE as "ridge-heads."

The production report said the writers took that and Worf's line into account when they wrote the episode.
