Keith R.A. DeCandido Ends NEXT GEN Saga With A TIME FOR WAR, A TIME FOR PEACE

Features

By BWilliams / 11:00, 26 October 2004 / Reviews - Books

Keith DeCandido has had a difficult act to follow. Over the last several months we have witnessed numerous life-changing events for the NEXT GENERATION cast, from the disastrous Rashanar incident in A TIME TO BE BORN and its dark repercussions in A TIME TO DIE, A TIME TO SOW, and A TIME TO HARVEST, to the hard-hitting violent times of A TIME TO LOVE and A TIME TO HATE, and the devastating brutality of the epic Tezwan conflict and its political underpinnings in A TIME TO KILL and A TIME TO HEAL. Now we come to A TIME FOR WAR, A TIME FOR PEACE, written by Keith R.A. DeCandido, the final book in the nine-book saga that leads into the events of NEMESIS. And if there was a book that could round out the series on a high note, this is it.

It's really difficult to begin expressing my thoughts about this final volume, in part because of all of the ups and downs Captain Picard and the crew of the Enterprise has faced over the last several months. After everything they've endured and all the death and destruction that has occurred, not to mention all of the heavy political battles they have faced on numerous alien worlds and at the very heart of the Federation, they're in dire need of a break. And after reading this final book, I'm as emotionally exhausted as the Enterprise crew is.

As if all of the violence on Tezwa wasn't enough, a radical faction attempts an overthrow of the Federation embassy on Qo'nos, killing a number of Klingons and Federation citizens and demanding a return to the old ways and the annulment of the Khitomer accords. But what begins as a radical group's coup d'etat quickly emerges into an investigation into the disappearance of the cloned Emperor Kahless, with the Klingons pointing the finger at the Federation and launching one attack after another on numerous Starfleet vessels. And it's up to the one person who can successfully cross the bridge between Qo'nos and the Federation to uncover the mystery: Worf.

Happier times abound on the Enterprise, as Will Riker and Deanna Troi make all of the arrangements for their upcoming wedding. But their plans keep getting sidetracked, with the investigation into Kahless' disappearance and a group of Starfleet officers investigating the Enterprise's crew and operations since Rashanar, which only adds to the mix.

On top of things, the Federation is undergoing radical changes in and of itself. With the abrupt resignation of Federation president Min Zife, this calls for an election, and everyone with an agenda on their plate tosses their name into the hat. This includes Nan Bacco, the governor of Cestus III, Fel Pagro, and even Starfleet Admiral William Ross is rumored to be a frontrunner for the presidency (given his major political influence during the Dominion War and the Tezwan conflict). Like the modern-day Bush/Kerry presidential race, it comes down to one thing: who can best lead the Federation and keep incidents like Rashanar or Tezwa from happening again. DeCandido pulls out all the stops in this subplot, right down to the political mudslinging. But given Starfleet's influence in the Federation, whichever candidate Starfleet backs is sure to win.

Everything builds to a head, and DeCandido has to carefully connect the dots together to lead into the beginning of NEMESIS. Perhaps that's part of the problem of a round-robin series, with one writer following in another's footsteps to ensure that the connective tissue from the previous work is maintained. Perhaps that's part of the problem of the beautiful train wreck that is NEMESIS, having to work to make sure that everything dovetails nicely from the novel into the events of the film and leads out of it, and that's been on the forefront of not only Keith DeCandido's mind but also of the minds of John Vornholt, Dayton Ward, Kevin Dilmore, Bob Greenberger, and David Mack. But DeCandido has pulled it off, and pulled it off well.

Character byplay is top on DeCandido's list, and he reveals some nice new aspects to Christine Vale's character I'd never thought of before, making her as vicious a poker player as Will Riker with a biting sense of humor to call her own. And he even makes a convincing return for Wesley Crusher, giving the fans a wink and a nod to all of the rampant theories about Wesley's return in the film. There's even a sly little Superman reference in the novel, if you're able to catch it. The final denouement and excerpt from the Book of Ecclesiastes, Chapter III, is a fitting and appropriate way to end this series, reminding us of the importance of what life is about. And while everyone may be heading off in different directions now, with new lives and careers, Riker himself best sums it up at story's end: they'll never be together again like this.

A TIME FOR WAR, A TIME FOR PEACE is the jewel in Keith DeCandido's crown, superbly capping off the NEXT GENERATION saga in high fashion.

just finished reading DeCandido's "A Time for War, A Time for Peace", and have to say that this has to be one of the best books I've read in the TNG series. He masterfully ends the TNG saga leaving me with hope and even more anticipation for the "Titan" series of books to come. but also leaves me a bit sad that I wont be reading anymore TNG novels.

Does anyone know if there will be a post Nemesis book for TNG?

Thanks for the kind words, but don't worry -- there will be more TNG novels, both before and after Nemesis.

There are two post-Nemesis TNG novels in the hopper right now. The first is by Michael Jan Friedman and is entitled Death in Winter -- it focuses on Picard and Crusher. The next will be by J.M. Dillard, and will involve the entire crew.

Meanwhile, Titan Book 1: Taking Wing by Michael A. Martin & Andy Mangels will be out in the spring of next year.

Also, we'll be getting to see the first year or so of the newly elected Federation president in my own Articles of the Federation next summer. :)

      This is fantastic news! :)

As for "A Time for War, A Time for Peace", I just could not put the book down. I was finished with it in two days. The sub story with the presidential race and Nan Bacco was very well thought out and very very well written. I here also that there is a novel coming out about the day-to-day life of Federation President Nan Bacco. -- really cant wait for this story. Her character is worth following up on.

      Great work!

Yup. Entitled Articles of the Federation, it'll be out next summer.

Michael Jan Friedman has been given the task of writing the first post-Nemesis story but I can't remember the title.

The first Titan book, "Taking Wind" is excerpted in A TIME FOR WAR, A TIME FOR PEACE and is due out next spring.

There will be new novels coming out that continue the Enterprise and her crew's adventures post-Nemesis, and there will be novels in a new series focusing on the Titan and her crew.

Yes, Pocket Books will release a post-NEMESIS series of TNG novels soon, plus a USS TITAN series of novels. TITAN: "TAKING WING", written by Andy Mangels and Michael A. Martin. First novel featuring the U.S.S Titan with 'Captain William T. Riker' in command, wraps up the Romulan storyline from the end of STAR TREK NEMESIS and continues forward from there. Can't wait.
