The latest issue of DreamWatch magazine, out in the UK, features an exclusive interview with Grace Lee Whitney, who played 'Janice Rand' in the first season of the original STAR TREK series and four TREK movies (THE MOTION PICTURE, THE SEARCH FOR SPOCK, THE VOYAGE HOME and THE UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY), in which she says she'd like to work again in a series of STAR TREK EXCELSIOR TV movies. Here are a few excerpts of the interview :

She was fired from the series during the first season "I almost committed suicide" the 74-year-old actress told journalist Ian Spelling "It was Leonard Nimoy who saved me. He wouldn't let me kill myself. He said I was going to be brought back. He said "They didn't kill you. If they didn't kill you, you'll be brought back. Don't worry. This is just a temporary thing." It took a long time - I didn't come back for the series - but he was right. I did the movies. I did VOYAGER. And if they had done an EXCELSIOR series I'd have a whole second career."

The actress was invited again to return to the STAR TREK universe in 1996 along with fellow actor George Takei (Captain Sulu), as "Commander Janice Rand," USS Excelsior Communications Officer in the STAR TREK VOYAGER episode "Flashback." This episode was specially penned to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the classic series. Soon after that, fan campaigns lobbied for a EXCELSIOR TV Series, via the internet and conventions, but it never came to pass.

"I think it was pretty close." she says "It didn't happen, but it was still amazing to get the call to come and do VOYAGER. I'd been watching Kate Mulgrew and Tim Russ and everyone on VOYAGER, and suddenly I was on the show."

"I still think an EXCELSIOR series with George and Gracie - which is what I suggested to [executive producer Brannon Braga], would be a good idea. I don't think it should be every week. I suggested they do four TV movies a year. That way we could bring really good writers in and bring in some of the TREK actors. Sulu and Rand would have been a great team. It's just too bad that it didn't happen."

After learning that Brent Spiner is doing three episodes of ENTERPRISE and that William Shatner is in negotiations in regards to a possible appearance on the show, she says "They should put me in one too. Tell Rick Berman to expect a call !"

While Flashback's script ended up being one big Meh, the acting by Takei and Whitney was real weak. Takei paled in comparison to Whitney, who was just absolutely awful. I mean cringe-inducing.

That said, I've never been opposed to the idea of a telefilm every so often.

However, if people want to get continuing adventures of the Excelsior, there's The Sundered, one of the Lost Era books dealing with Sulu and company and it's probably the best Trek book I've read in the last couple years. There's another one coming out next year I think.

Okay, so it's not "Oh", but hey, whatever works, right? ;)

Seriously, that seems to be what Braga is saying to himself while scratching himself: "Why didn't I think of this and listen to the fans in the first place?"

Now someone post the subject "Oh" and we'll be all set. :-)

Seriously, the Excelsior TV series or TV movies sound like a good idea... They've got the ships and possibly the sets still lying around, they've got willing actors, they've got tons of fans behind it... Why aren't they going for it?

Yeah I would like to see Yeoman Janice Rand in more Trek too. I thought Janice Rand from the Excelsior in Star Trek 6 played that part well. It kind of slipped my mind that Yeoman from Star Trek and Janice Rand from the Excelsior was the same person, as she looked a bit different.

I would like to see more continuing voyages of Excelsior and or some other good Star Trek tv movies of sorts too. They should go for it!.

My friend's roommate used to babysit for Jonathan Frakes, and he put her into an episode of TNG as an admiral walking around in the background.

I'm sure she'd like a regular role on Star Trek too.

How is her story not news?

I really dislike her, in her insufferable interviews and her woeful acting appearances.

But I'd still see 'Excelsior' TV movies or miniseries in spite of her involvement.

Please, get a copy of The Captain's Daughter, an awesome 1995 novel written by New Frontier author Peter David, would make a great tv movie. It also features Captain John Harriman, Demora Sulu (of course) and the USS Enterprise-B - and it would be a wonderful part for actor Alan Ruck as an older Harriman. A really wonderful story, the best Excelsior story I have ever read. A must.

Here is a brief synopsis : "When Demora Sulu, an exemplary young Starfleet officer, suddenly attacks her commanding officer, Captain John Harriman, who kills her in self-defense, everyone is stunned. No one is more grief-
stricken than her father, Captain Hikaru Sulu of the U.S.S. Excelsior. Determined to learn the truth behind his daughter's bizarre death, Sulu goes to the planet where she was killed, and finds himself confronted by an old enemy eager to destroy Sulu's reputation and his life!"

I recently purchased Star Trek Classic Season One on DVD and find her parts really delightful. Though I can't speak too highly of the way they did the show back then, I can on the other defend certain aspects. One such being the work she did and Yoeman Janice Rand. Hopefully I spelled that right, well anyway... I can't imagine she's that age now, but if she wants to rejoin the new age of Star Trek, more power to her.

No, her work in the '60s was harmless fun, but 'Flashback,' dreadful script though it may have been, highlighted how stiff and lifeless she now is onscreen.

And I still dislike her in interviews and convention appearances. She actually asks people when they come up for autographs if they've found God!

There's a Buffy actress notorious for that. She was in the first couple of seasons and played a teacher called Jenny. It's got her banned from a major convention organisation because she's using it to champion her religious beliefs and preach.

Since according to Rick Berman the next Trek feature film will be a prequel story, I like the idea of Trek TV movies, like adaptations of the "Shatnerverse" novels, or EXCELSIOR or the even a Captain Riker/USS TITAN TV movies starring Jonathan Frakes and Marina Sirtis, and so forth.

BTW, please check it out Grace's official website here
