John Billingsley Talks "Cold Station 12", STAR TREK's Future in New U.S. Dreamwatch

Features

By Steve Krutzler / 13:27, 12 October 2004 / Enterprise

Dreamwatch is launching a new U.S. edition of the popular U.K. magazine this month, and issue #1 includes interviews with STAR TREK: ENTERPRISE's Jolene Blalock ('T'Pol') and John Billingsley ('Phlox'). The NX-01 doc interviews himself, in a manner of speaking, for a personal journal from behind the scenes of ENTERPRISE and Dreamwatch has provided TrekWeb with a few excerpts.

John writes about his views on the actor Richard Riehle, who plays Phlox's friend and medical colleague in the upcoming "Cold Station 12."

"Dr Lucas is played by Richard Riehle, whom I have known for over 20 years. He's a great guy. We've both been joking around about the homoerotic subtext of our characters' relationship."

Billingsley is decidedly matter of fact regarding the immediate future of STAR TREK on television.

"I think the general consensus is that this is the last year of the show unless we see some real growth in the ratings."

Despite the baggage, the ENTERPRISE cast still manages to have fun on the set.

"When all of us are in a scene together, but no one really has to say anything, or do any heavy emoting, it drives the crew crazy 'cuz we can't be serious and the day gets looonngger and looonnnngger."

You can read Billingsley's full diary article in issue #1 of Dreamwatch, available October 19th.

Calm down on this. This is something actors sometimes do to have some fun, through some hints in about a secret lust for one another now and then. Some that I know were in a play about the fall of the Czar in Russia, and they liked to pretend that Czar Nicolai and Dr. Botkin were in love during rehearsals. They said it drove the director crazy.

What did MacBeth think of this post? "It is a tale Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury Signifying nothing."

Where does this "homoerotic" subtext implication come from? So, Human and Denobulan doctors exchange places in their respective cultures, under the auspices of the Vulcan Interspecies Medical Exchange -- yet, they're not then allowed to correlate their respective experiences without garnering some reputation of homosexuality?

So, does Billingsley imply that B&B storytelling says that males can't be friends in written (text) ccommunication without also wanting to be BJ buddies?

you are taking billingsley way way too seriously. i think that he has made a 'homoerotic subtext' comment/joke in just about every interview he has done--in both referring to himself, or any other male cast member. he just likes to goof off with these throw away 'gay' comments

Dr. Lucas is also a Denobulan, and a close friend of Dr. Phlox. There have been pix of the actor in Denobulan make-up. I would assume that perhaps there is some relationship between the two beyond their leters, as it has been stated that denobulan marriages and sexuality are quite different from humans, including multiple wives and the like. perhaps they share a wife or some such other thing. I mean, of anyone on the crew, Phlox is the one you'd point to and say "Flamer!" (Not to inflame, I am a gay guy... and you all know he's a touch of a queen..) so, it doesn't surprise me that there might be a touch of that in the relationship between Phlox and Lucas, at least perhaps in subtext. If you saw me with my gay friends, hangin out, you'd be hard pressed to figure out who was sleeping with who, even though we are just friends and nothing more.

So there ya go...
