John Billingsley Talks "Cold Station 12", STAR TREK's Future in New U.S. Dreamwatch

Features

By Steve Krutzler / 13:27, 12 October 2004 / Enterprise

Dreamwatch is launching a new U.S. edition of the popular U.K. magazine this month, and issue #1 includes interviews with STAR TREK: ENTERPRISE's Jolene Blalock ('T'Pol') and John Billingsley ('Phlox'). The NX-01 doc interviews himself, in a manner of speaking, for a personal journal from behind the scenes of ENTERPRISE and Dreamwatch has provided TrekWeb with a few excerpts.

John writes about his views on the actor Richard Riehle, who plays Phlox's friend and medical colleague in the upcoming "Cold Station 12."

"Dr Lucas is played by Richard Riehle, whom I have known for over 20 years. He's a great guy. We've both been joking around about the homoerotic subtext of our characters' relationship."

Billingsley is decidedly matter of fact regarding the immediate future of STAR TREK on television.

"I think the general consensus is that this is the last year of the show unless we see some real growth in the ratings."

Despite the baggage, the ENTERPRISE cast still manages to have fun on the set.

"When all of us are in a scene together, but no one really has to say anything, or do any heavy emoting, it drives the crew crazy 'cuz we can't be serious and the day gets looonngger and looonnnngger."

You can read Billingsley's full diary article in issue #1 of Dreamwatch, available October 19th.

It's return to prime time television can be attributed to a successful fan renewnal campaign last year. CHUCK is a one-hour, action-comedy series that follows Chuck Bartowski (Zachary Levi, "Less Than Perfect") -- a computer geek who is catapulted into a new career as the government's most vital secret agent. This upcoming season will include some special guest stars, including Brandon Routh of "Superman Returns" who will play CIA agent Daniel Shaw in an episode, and the addition of SUBWAY restaurant as a major advertiser to the show. Chuck averaged a 4.0/6 rating last season, about eight percent better than the recently cancelled "Trauma". Ratings-challenged Heroes moves back an hour when Chuck returns on Monday nights. STAR TREK VOYAGER's Robert Duncan McNeill serves Chuck as a supervising producer and director.0

????

Wasn't Dr. Lucas supposed to be Human per ENT "Dear Doctor"? In fact, he was supposedly the "first" (and only) Human serving on Denobula. that is why he was involved in the "Interspecies Medical Program". If he were Denobulan, why would he be in the program on Denobula?

So did they suddenly change his species and if so, why?

I remember the picture you may be referring to and if it is the same one, it was of some radio D.J. in Texas who had a part in an upcoming ep. Perhaps he was a Denobulan replacement for Phlox on Earth and not actually Lucas?

"I think the show talked to people through the characters. They're stories that speak to the heart. They talk about love, they talk about friendship, they talk about loyalty, they talk about patriotism, exploration, curiosity, reaching out... And I think all those things still touch people. Even when you look at a 30-year old show, it still has something to say." - D.C. Fontana, Sci Fi Channel Special Edition TOS 1998
----
"If the season finale involves the re-built USS Reliant coming back in time to the 21st Century crewed by Moogie, Dr. Selar, Morn, Transporter Chief Kyle, and the Salt Vampire, then we'll know that Coto has gone too far." - tomba1701
