Manny Coto Chat Transcript Online, Talks Romulan Wars and Mirror Universe

Features

By GustavoLeao / 20:24, 8 October 2004 / Enterprise

Star Trek.com just hosted a chat with STAR TREK ENTERPRISE producer Manny Coto. Here are a few excerpts of the Q&A session :

Q : Are there more episodes coming with actors from the other series?

Manny Coto : Yes, but I can't go into specifics right now.

Q : Is there any chance that we might see any ORIGINAL SERIES aliens like: The Gorn, Salt vampire, etc, or a Trelane-like character?

Manny Coto : Unfortunately, the Gorn, Trelane and the Salt Vampire seemed very much to me to be first contact entities. I wanted to work in the Gorn, but when you watch "Arena" it's pretty clear we're seeing them for the first time.

Q : Will we ever see the Earth-Romulan war? That's what I was hoping to see when I first heard about ENTERPRISE.[...]

Manny Coto : I think you definitely will see the Earth-Romulan War, I just don't know if you'll see it on ENTERPRISE. And if you live long enough, you may see it for real.

Q : What are your duties as Executive Producer, aside from writing?

Manny Coto : My duties include making sure the writers are supplied with adequate amounts of coffee... I provide the occasional foot massage... and I regularly must remind Mike Sussman to bathe.

Seriously, my job involves creating storylines and mostly rewriting. Many of the scripts wind up going through my keyboard and between those two duties, it's a pretty full day. But on top of that, there are casting sessions, visits to the set to make sure that a piece of costume or makeup looks right, and then there is making sure that Brannon [Braga] has taken his medication.

Q : Are there any plans to have a mirror universe episode in ENTERPRISE? There has been much discussion on the boards about the possiblities and desire to see such a show.

Manny Coto : We do have plans for a Mirror Universe episode. I can't tell you when we'll pull the trigger on such an episode, but it is being discussed. We are planning on doing a Mirror Universe episode where ENTERPRISE is still on Wednesday nights and command 12 million viewers.

Q : Will we hear more about T'Pol's Panar Syndrome which was mention in Season 2's Stigma this season?

Manny Coto : We will address T'Pol's Panar Syndrome in the upcoming Vulcan arc.

The full transcript can be found at the Star Trek.com.

Don't believe that this industry is closed to anyone. And by the way, if you don't have talent, and persevere, you could still become incredibly wealthy.

It is a dream-come-true job... However it is also quite stressful, but it's a good kind of stress. Every day you're stepping into uncharted territory and it makes life always interesting and never boring... except for the times when I have to listen to Andre Bormanis pitch something. In those cases it is always a good idea to have a crash cart standing by to restart the pulse.

And interview is full of these. Go and read it!!!

Good interview. He is a smart and funny guy.

He said that there will be another Trek actor appearing on ENTERPRISE other than Spiner, but he couldn't say anything else about it. I wonder if he's referring to Shatner ?

I think if it was Shatner, Coto would have given a bigger hint to that effect. It could be anyone from TNG, DS9, or VOY (except Patrick Stewart, probably.)

Was "Storm Front" written/outlined when season three ended, or was it more of a "write us out this situation" type of thing?

Manny Coto
I'm afraid it was Number Two.

as if there was any doubt.

I have attended many Star Trek conventions. My first convention was the Orlando Star Trek con, I believe it was 1978 and it was the first Star Trek convention in Orlando. We were all very excited. The guest of honor was Walter Koenig and I waited in line for what must have been an hour (at least it seemed that long) to get his autograph.

I bet its been awhile since we've had that kind of TOS fan close to the top.

LOL!

This guy is awesome. Not only does he flat out mention that "Arena" was the first contact episode for the Gorn and that's his reason for not having them on the show, he also jokes about the ratings, etc. at the end of the discussion.

Hopefully this guy brings ENT back to new heights.
