Scott Bakula Enthusiastic with ENT Season Four, Talks Fan Campaigns, New Writers and QUANTUM LEAP on DVD

Features

By GustavoLeao / 21:28, 21 August 2004 / Enterprise

The latest issue of the brazilian Sci Fi News magazine features an exclusive interview with STAR TREK ENTERPRISE star Scott Bakula, in which the actor talks to journalist Lu Costa about the upcoming fourth season, the fan campaings to save the show, the 'Captain Archer' character and more. Since the original transcript is not available, the available translation back to English is somewhat imperfect. Here are several quotes from the interview:

Bakula on ENTERPRISE :

"It is impressive to see how much ENTERPRISE is worshipped by the fans, have seen the sites SaveEnterprise.com and EnterpriseProgect.org that gathered an immense amount of e-mails, fax and letters so that the fourth season was possible. Then I don't have words to express my gratitude to the fans."

"I received a call from Garry Hart (President from Paramount Television Production) in New York, and he said to me that the fourth season from ENTERPRISE was confirmed. And it was a big problem to me when he asked me to keep secret, although I have got keep it."

"It's strange say that we had shot only one final to the third season, while everyone thought that we should do more than one final, because we wasn’t sure about the future of the series. The nice was when we discovered that would exist a fourth season and the end was better - even that we had shot before the good news."

"We still don't having the DVDs with the seasons from ENTERPRISE, because Paramount still releasing VOYAGER’s series and they want to give time to fans save their money to buy all STAR TREK series."

"Unfortunately I can't confirm the rumors about the appearance of William Shatner in the next season of ENTERPRISE, because I don't know anything about this."

"I believe that I'm very calm about the series. The other members from the series are apprehensive about the stories from the new season. In fact, Rick [Berman] is negotiating more writers for this new season, trying to avoid that the show be stressing and repetitive."

"We are very enthusiastic with the new season. I think that this will be a great time for the series."

"The shots for the new season already began in the end of July, and we are three weeks late compared with last year because of the delay in the renew of the series. We’ll shot 22 episodes and not 26 as last season. But you people in Brazil don’t have to worry about this, right? You didn’t saw the third season yet, did you?"

"It’s possible to time travels be explored in fourth season, but there is no sure if this will happen or how it will be."

Bakula on Captain Jonathan Archer :

"Since the beginning my character has been well accept by fans of ENTERPRISE and STAR TREK, but I think that third season was the best for Archer. And, as actor, I had the chance to make interesting choices about some events with the character. It was very interesting. I hope that now the character grow up even more and satisfy more the audience."

"I found great that third season was longer. It was possible to do more for the characters and for the series. For Archer was great, because I had the opportunity of show more the character, captivating more people."

"I don’t have the slightest idea abut the future of Captain Archer. There was an episode in the series that, depending from interpretation, will not exist a Mrs. Archer."

Bakula on Bakula :

"I don’t have anything schedule for the next months, only the first shots form fourth season of ENTERPRISE (that we hope won’t be the last). Then, I’ll only think in new projects after the end of Enterprise, but we never know."

"For now I don’t have plans of travel, because, in the moment, the work is in first place for me."

"I love talk with my children and help them in difficulties and I hope that they’ll do as I did for me: ask advices from older people about their experiences."

"My true name isn’t Scott Bakula, but Denny Crane." (laughs) [William Shatner’s character on BOSTON LEGAL].

Bakula on QUANTUM LEAP :

"I’m immensely happy with the release of the first season of QUANTUM LEAP on DVD, with interviews with me will be on the box."

"It’s impressive how my participation in QUANTUM LEAP made people come to watch ENTERPRISE, even those who doesn’t know STAR TREK universe. Now I know that many people become fan of STAR TREK too."

"Many people couldn’t watch the final of QUANTUM LEAP and I feel bad to know that when the last episode was written, Don (Bellisario - creator of the series) didn’t know that was the last, then he tried to do something to continue."

Bakula on STAR TREK :

"I absolutely would love to live on STAR TREK universe. I always found this fascinating and I always was a fan."

"STAR TREK always had a metaphoric tone with events occurred in history and always transmitted messages to the public. And ENTERPRISE is a little bit different from that, transmitting concepts a little more aggressive. Then it doesn’t keep the true vision from [Gene] Roddenberry."

A lot of money for Box sets | Report this post to moderator

They dont want to release all the boxsets so people will save their money? I'll say. At $100.00 per season per series that adds up to, including Enterprise that comes out to almost 3k and Paramount is milking the fans dry. Thanks for waiting a few months so we can save our pennies although I wont be buying Enterprise.
I hope Bakula is right about the 4th season. I want it to be good but he has said that every season so...

;)
I hope season 4 reflects the sense of optimism and fun people like Bakula and Coto are buttering us up with. It'll need it to get a season 5.

From above:

Bakula on Captain Jonathan Archer :

This is a shame considering that I felt the character ended up going from one extreme to the other and nothing was really developed for that character personally to justify the radical change in behavior. And certainly the "Because Earth was at risk" excuse is not suitable justification within the context of the Star Trek universe. You need only look at the other Trek Captains who dealt with similar circumstances. And no... being "new" in deep space is NOT an excuse because Trek highlights the traits of Humanity that allow that Human to succeed (or at least strive to succeed), despite the odds or unusual circumstances. It has NOTHING to do with discovering the latest technobabble solution to the problem - THAT is usually the Vulcan's role. ;-) The Trek Captain, if anything, possesses a keen sense of resourcefulness, and THAT needs to come to the fore with this Captain.

I really really REALLY DO hope that this character can come into his own this coming season.

Ummm... I'm not sure if something was lost in the translation from English - > Portugese back to English here but from what I have read several times now from Bakula in other interviews, is that he had supposedly been calling for less episodes per season because he supposedly felt that 26 was just too much. Perhaps the above is referring to the actual "arc" as opposed to the number of eps, which would make more sense.

Quote:

"I don’t have the slightest idea abut the future of Captain Archer. There was an episode in the series that, depending from interpretation, will not exist a Mrs. Archer."

Well it would be NICE if he DID have "the slightest idea" about the future of this character because that character is very much the focus (like other Treks) of the show.

I have that first season DVD set - the first and only that I have ever made a conscious choice to buy. And athough there's only like 8 eps there, the interview snippets are great - especially those from Dean Stockwell and Don Bellasario (someone who I maintain SHOULD be involved in the Trek franchise to head it up since he DOES have a "vision" within the context of science fiction television and how that setting can highlight character interactions). Witness his work on the original BSG and series such as QL and more recently, JAG.

Quote:

"It’s impressive how my participation in QUANTUM LEAP made people come to watch ENTERPRISE, even those who doesn’t know STAR TREK universe. Now I know that many people become fan of STAR TREK too."

Yeah, this was an interesting crossover phenomena here (which I figure they took advantage of when making the decision to cast Bakula). The fandom has actually gained some Leapers who follow Bakula around and perhaps they'll go back and look at the earlier Trek series and join the club. ;-)

Quote:

"Many people couldn’t watch the final of QUANTUM LEAP and I feel bad to know that when the last episode was written, Don (Bellisario - creator of the series) didn’t know that was the last, then he tried to do something to continue."

Well... considering that plans were supposedly being made to revive the series - if anything, perhaps a mini-series (the last I heard was that Deborah Pratt was working on this and Stockwell would reprise his role, but the focus would be on the daughter of Sam - mainly because Bakula is obviously involved in ENT). Of course, if this coming season ends up being ENT's final one (and at this point, I hope not provided they can do a halfway decent turnaround here), then Bakula DOES have a place to go. ;-)

Quote:

Bakula on STAR TREK :

"I absolutely would love to live on STAR TREK universe. I always found this fascinating and I always was a fan."

So he always says. ;-)

Quote:

"STAR TREK always had a metaphoric tone with events occurred in history and always transmitted messages to the public. And ENTERPRISE is a little bit different from that, transmitting concepts a little more aggressive. Then it doesn’t keep the true vision from [Gene] Roddenberry."

Well something may have been lost in the translation here but I think the concept of the metaphors and message MUST take on a MUCH HIGHER level of sophistication with ENT at this point because it isn't there yet. And to me, this involves someone who is well read in history and current events and can extrapolate, in a speculative fiction sense, into the future. And this sort of thing has been missing in ENT.

If anything, the Trek universe itself has provided plenty of species that have NOT been fleshed out very well and who can take on some analogous role that mirrors current times, if they just tap into that.

I know that NX-47 had posted some speculative idea threads - like this one here, and I think that more of these need to be considered as possible jumping-off points for finally developing the Trek universe circa the 2150s.

"I think the show talked to people through the characters. They're stories that speak to the heart. They talk about love, they talk about friendship, they talk about loyalty, they talk about patriotism, exploration, curiosity, reaching out... And I think all those things still touch people. Even when you look at a 30-year old show, it still has something to say." - D.C. Fontana, Sci Fi Channel Special Edition TOS 1998
----
"If the season finale involves the re-built USS Reliant coming back in time to the 21st Century crewed by Moogie, Dr. Selar, Morn, Transporter Chief Kyle, and the Salt Vampire, then we'll know that Coto has gone too far." - tomba1701

That article was poorly translated. | Report this post to moderator

I've been disappointed in the past with promises of great things to come, however, the previews to the Xindi arc pretty much delivered what it said it would and there was a marked improvement in attention to what they were doing.

This upcoming season will be interesting to watch, if they can get beyond the overused and asinine time travel stuff, the show should be even better.

Of course, the main thing with this show will always be THE WRITING!!! I don't expect Scott to come right out and say that the writing sucked, he said something more along the lines of the characters getting more definition. The writing has improved slowly, they're lucky to have another season to do this show. If they're going to do another season beyond the upcoming one, the show will have to really stand apart from the stuff they've released the previous years.

One thing annoyed me, and I don't know if it's the translation or what, and I have no illusions about the merchandising factor in all of this, but Bakula is quoted in the article as saying:
Quote:
"We still don't having the DVDs with the seasons from ENTERPRISE, because Paramount still releasing VOYAGER’s series and they want to give time to fans save their money to buy all STAR TREK series."
I just wish that Paramount would put as much effort into creating a more thoughtful and better put together series as they obviously do with making sure people can buy the product on DVD. VOYAGER is probably the last thing I would ever consider buying on DVD, there were too many behind the scenes problems that prevented the show from even being close to special. If anything, ENTERPRISE is about growth and illusions. Growth can only be achieved for the franchise once the illusions that TPTB have been living under have been expunged... If they take care with what they're creating, this show could last the usual seven years or more.

Sorry, the brazilian guy who translated it from the Bühler's Web Site website must have translated it poorly. Since I don't have the brazilian Sci Fi News magazine here with me with the original interview in portuguese, I can't translated it again into a more understandable english. MAybe Steve can check the spelling and fix it or just adapt it into a more understandable english ?
