Producer Manny Coto Talks Brent Spiner's 'Soong' Arc, Plus His Vision for ENT Season Four

Features

By Steve Krutzler / 04:51, 18 August 2004 / Enterprise

In a new interview here at TrekWeb, STAR TREK: ENTERPRISE excecutive producer Manny Coto says he has a specific vision for the show's fourth season.

"My vision is to try to fulfill what I think is ENTERPRISE’s promise, which is to create a truly prequel series," Coto explains. "And that is to being to tie ENTERPRISE into the overall STAR TREK canon and to really use the opportunity that we have to create stories that give us a glimpse into the formation of the STAR TREK universe."

He also revealed that the 'Arik Soong' arc now in production and guest starring Brent Spiner ('Data') originally had a ST:TOS inspiration.

"When we found out that Brent was interested we tried to tailor it to him, and having seen the dailies he’s terrific in this part," he says. "For a little while I even toyed with the idea of him playing Colonel Green, but I think he’s more interesting playing this character."

For much more, including Coto's discussion of new writers Alan Brennert and Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens, William Shatner's possible appearance, and the upcoming Vulcan story arc, check out the full interview.

Coto might be off on the time period for Colonal Green, but the guy is at least trying.

I often wonder if Rick Berman has ever watched all the episodes of TOS. Maybe's he's just too busy in his job. But with the financial importance of the franchise, and his lofty salary, you'd think he'd want to know Star Trek inside and out. And if he has watched them before, how often does he go back to the source material for a refresher?

That's the first thing Harve Bennett did when he took over the movie franchise. He watched every single TOS episode. He respected the source material, took pieces from it, and presented it in a new way. That's why you see bit characters from TOS in his movies, like Transporter Chief Kyle, now serving in new positions in the movies. It's those kind of touches that tie everything together.

Earth's world government... | Report this post to moderator

Quote from Jadzia-Dax:
But the key here is that the creation of the new Earth World Government happened RIGHT DURING ENT'S TIMEFRAME (hint hint Manny... ;-)).

And let's not forget what Picard mentions in TNG Up the Long Ladder: The Mariposa -- a DY-500 colony vessel, destined for the Ficus Sector -- was launched in late 2123 by the European Hegemony, described as a loose political alliance and the beginnings of a world government on Earth.

Riker: "The European Hegemony?"

Picard: "A loose alliance that formed in the early twenty-second century. It was the first step toward a world government. You should read more history, Number One."

Note the important parts regarding the Shatner appearance.

1. If it happens, the Reeves Stevenses WILL write it.

2. Negotiations are very active and ongoing. It's all about numbers now.

3. This proves that the Shatner comment on his board was Mr. Shatner exercising wit, not being literal.
