Producer Manny Coto Talks Brent Spiner's 'Soong' Arc, Plus His Vision for ENT Season Four

Features

By Steve Krutzler / 04:51, 18 August 2004 / Enterprise

In a new interview here at TrekWeb, STAR TREK: ENTERPRISE excecutive producer Manny Coto says he has a specific vision for the show's fourth season.

"My vision is to try to fulfill what I think is ENTERPRISE’s promise, which is to create a truly prequel series," Coto explains. "And that is to being to tie ENTERPRISE into the overall STAR TREK canon and to really use the opportunity that we have to create stories that give us a glimpse into the formation of the STAR TREK universe."

He also revealed that the 'Arik Soong' arc now in production and guest starring Brent Spiner ('Data') originally had a ST:TOS inspiration.

"When we found out that Brent was interested we tried to tailor it to him, and having seen the dailies he’s terrific in this part," he says. "For a little while I even toyed with the idea of him playing Colonel Green, but I think he’s more interesting playing this character."

For much more, including Coto's discussion of new writers Alan Brennert and Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens, William Shatner's possible appearance, and the upcoming Vulcan story arc, check out the full interview.

This upcoming season will include some special guest stars, including Brandon Routh of "Superman Returns" who will play CIA agent Daniel Shaw in an episode, and the addition of SUBWAY restaurant as a major advertiser to the show. Chuck averaged a 4.0/6 rating last season, about eight percent better than the recently cancelled "Trauma". Ratings-challenged Heroes moves back an hour when Chuck returns on Monday nights. Note the important parts regarding the Shatner appearance.

1. If it happens, the Reeves Stevenses WILL write it.

But let's just HOPE that TPTB WILL LET THEM WRITE IT and NOT put their silly stamp all over it.

Sadly I have seen what could have been half-way decent ENT eps that ended up utterly ruined by stupidity that one can obviously track back to a certain writer - particularly since most of these stories ARE a "group effort" (but with one or a pair or so getting the actual "story credit").

"I think the show talked to people through the characters. They're stories that speak to the heart. They talk about love, they talk about friendship, they talk about loyalty, they talk about patriotism, exploration, curiosity, reaching out... And I think all those things still touch people. Even when you look at a 30-year old show, it still has something to say." - D.C. Fontana, Sci Fi Channel Special Edition TOS 1998
----
"If the season finale involves the re-built USS Reliant coming back in time to the 21st Century crewed by Moogie, Dr. Selar, Morn, Transporter Chief Kyle, and the Salt Vampire, then we'll know that Coto has gone too far." - tomba1701
