Paramount has announced a number of roles it's looking to fill for episode four of STAR TREK: ENTERPRISE's new season, "Borderland." Executive producer Manny Coto has previously revealed that the story will begin a three-episode arc dealing with the ancestor of 'Dr. Noonien Soong' -- a scientist by the name of 'Arik Soong', to be played by Brent Spiner ('Data') -- attempting to resurrect genetically-engineered soldiers from the time of the Eugenics Wars.

TrekWeb has learned that these supersoldiers will be called "augments" and the studio has put out the call for both male and female roles. 'Malik' will be the leader of the group, in his early twenties, and determined to live up to Soong's wishes for his kind to demonstrate humanity's greater potential. 'Raakin' will be slightly older and similar to Malik, but won't make it through the episode. Both men are described as "toned" and "perfect looking," qualities also needed for 'Persis', a female augment in her early twenties: "the perfect woman."

The Enterprise will get its latest new crewmember in 'Lucas McGregor', a twentysomething who may recur and who is captured along with 'T'Pol' (Jolene Blalock) by an imposing Orion in charge of slaves. Coto has stated that the Orions and their green "slave girls" would be involved in this storyline. The Borderland is a region between Klingon and Orion Syndicate space, according to Coto, and Soong's actions threaten to spark a war with the Klingons. To that end, this first installment of the arc will also include a run-in with a Klingon crew.

"Borderland" is slated to go before cameras next week under the direction of David Livingston. Until this information is confirmed by Paramount, cum grano salis.

"Persis" is a tip of the hat to Persis Khambatta who played "Ilia" in TMP.

Data/Eugenics | Report this post to moderator

Interesting to bring Data's ancestor and the Eugenics war together.

Datas father was Noonien Soong, and Khan's name is "Khan Noonian Singh".

Interesting Coincidence.

The origin of this coincidence can be traced all the way back to Gene Roddenberry himself.

According to Roddenberry, he had a friend in the military named Noonian Singh, and apparently he lost contact with Mr. Singh over the years after World War II. So Roddenberry came up with the characters of "Khan Noonien Singh" (TOS) and "Noonien Soong" (TNG) in an attempt to contact his old friend to see if he was still out there somewhere and possibly reconnect with his old friend.

Maybe they'll make Soong somehow a descendent of Khan's bloodline! That would be pretty cool.

Plenty of Twenty | Report this post to moderator
By: Augment (Odo's file, contact) @ 20:22:51 on Aug 04, 2004

Once again, ENT's casting people are loooking for guest actors who are in their twenties - or even in their *early* twenties. So what, some might ask. After all these actors are going to portray superfit enhanced supersoldiers. And don't all of us know the core audience UPN is targeting with ENT?

Those justifications notwithstanding, personally I am more and more annoyed at that twenty-something practice. Yeah, a lot of TST's are good-looking. But what about characters not only shining superficially? What about serious or wise or strict or compassionate characters believably played by aged actors and actresses?

Giving the ridiculousness of manning the fleet's best ship with a (bridge) crew whose age averages between twenty and thirty, it would be very pleasant if at least a good deal of guest actors were in their forties or fifties. I mean, to quote The Simpsons, even those people are only "ugly" in terms of "TV ugly"...

I figure Starfleet is a relatively new organisation. It hasn't been around long enough to have many older officers yet. Even admiral Forest doesn't look that old. I figure they gave promotions real easy early on to establish a command structure, and now they're filling it in with newer recruits.

Most guest stars probably are older. This story is simply about genetically-engineered super soldiers, which naturally would probably be in their twenties owing to physical strength and condition. Khan was pretty young in "Space Seed," thirties perhaps? Could've been older I suppose, but then again these characters are "new" soldiers that Soong has somehow freshly bred, at least from what we know of the plot.

Even though it's not canon, in the Eugenics Wars novels by Greg Cox, Khan was supposed to be in his early to mid twenties, but maybe he aged a bit while sleeping for nearly 300 years.

Firstly I hate enterprise with a passion. I tried to like it but it just never worked for me. Listless story lines and wooden acting killed it for me early on.

Also the thought of using cast members from TOS or any other Trek series sounds like a desperation to me and especially Spiner.

Having got all that off my chest, this doesn't sound as horrendous as I thought it would. This could even turn out ok if done correctly.

It's definately peaked my interest for the first time since Broken Bow.

I might even tune in for the first time in almost 4 years.

Has Coto single handedly saved the Star Trek franchise? Is season 4 of Enterprise going to rival the best seasons of Trek?

I hope so, man do I hope so.

How, with what amounts to all of a lick and a promise?

None of Coto's S3 scripts show Star Trek savvy. So far, S4 is all TOS "continuity porn" PR.

Trek has never really explored the "Eugenics"-era beyond Khan, so it will be nice to see what type of repracussions will be sitting behind.

Also too, this is in a way a return to TOS. We get to see more and more situations with the Klingons quickly go to hell in a handbasket due to the fact that both sides (in a way) are hot heads.

Anyways, this should be interesting...

Its nice to see Enterprise getting back on trek. The wonderful thing about the star trek universe is the diverse cast of aliens and cultures. However, when you introduce new races every week without properly exploring the ones you already have, they start to get redundant. i would love to learn more about the Orions, the Telleraties, even the gorn if they could find a cool way to throw them in. One of the best things about DS9 was that we learned so much about the Dominion, Cardassians, Ferengi, trills, and the breen. These races alone let very good stories regarding their cultures. But this was majoring absent in TNG and Voyager were we saw the usually Alien of the week. We would see them once, and puff! Never again! I would imagine since the NX Enterprise is slower then all the other ships we've seen they would run into the same races on more in one occasion. Hopefully this season will be the shot in the arm Star Trek needs

That's a damn shame... if that weren't so I'd love to see them on ENT.

I always thought they should have done more with the Gorn, like put them on TNG or DS9 or something, that would have been really great.
