Brent Spiner Confirmed for Three-Ep Stint, Plus UPN Angling for Shatner Services

By Steve Krutzler / 13:53, 19 July 2004 / Enterprise

Following last week's report that STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION star Brent Spiner ('Data') would guest star on ENTERPRISE this season, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed the news this morning.

Spiner will play the great-great-grandfather of 'Dr. Noonien Soong', the creator of Spiner's android alter-ego Data. Spiner himself played Soong in TNG's episode "Brothers," which also featured the actor as Data's evil twin 'Lore'. TV Guide this morning adds that Spiner's appearance will span episodes four through six of ENTERPRISE's fourth season. The premiere "Storm Front, Pt. 1" is currently in production here in Los Angeles.

Another report last week revealed that the storyline will involve Spiner's character's ironic opposition to the development of artifical intelligence. This according to VOYAGER actor Robert Picardo, who told fans in a chat last week that he had pitched the same idea for an ancestor of 'Dr. Lewis Zimmerman', the holographic scientist that created 'The Doctor.'

In other ENTERPRISE news, TV Guide also reports that UPN is in talks with ABC to secure William Shatner for a potential guest appearance on the series this fall. Numerous reports have swirled that Shatner himself has suggested a storyline and both Rick Berman and Brannon Braga say they welcome the opportunity. No information is yet known about whether Shatner would play 'James T. Kirk', the captain's ancestor, or some other character. ABC, which holds Shatner under contract for his new series BOSTON LEGAL, tells the mag, however, that UPN has yet to make any official offer.

Umm.... In most of the cases, except for some scripted close-up shots - something that happens in most TV shows due to insurance concerns, Shatner didn't do his own "fight scenes" in the '60s when he was in this 30s or did you somehow have this fantasy that he did?

Even Bakula, as physically fit as he is, steps back to let stunt doubles to do some of the more intense stuff per demand of his employer.

Bakula turns 50 this coming October. Are YOU going to tell him to chalk it up as well since so many kids on this board think that anything over 30 is "old"? A man who completed his first full marathon this year as a goal for himself before he turned 50?

I think the question you should ask yourself is why you and so many others obsess and crave for violence as a necessary component in Star Trek? Is this to supposedly make Trek uber cool or some other such nonsense?

--------

"I think the show talked to people through the characters. They're stories that speak to the heart. They talk about love, they talk about friendship, they talk about loyalty, they talk about patriotism, exploration, curiosity, reaching out... And I think all those things still touch people. Even when you look at a 30-year old show, it still has something to say." - D.C. Fontana, Sci Fi Channel Special Edition TOS 1998
----
"If the season finale involves the re-built USS Reliant coming back in time to the 21st Century crewed by Moogie, Dr. Selar, Morn, Transporter Chief Kyle, and the Salt Vampire, then we'll know that Coto has gone too far." - tomba1701
