Paramount Home Entertainment has formally announced the DVD release of TREKKIES 2 for Tuesday, August 31, according to the official announcement at StarTrek.com. The DVD will appear in stores the same day as the first season set of the original STAR TREK series.

Reuniting filmmakers Roger Nygard, Denise Crosby ('Tasha Yar'), and Mike Leahy, TREKKIES 2 takes a look at the worldwide STAR TREK phenomenon, traveling to Germany, France, England, Italy, Serbia, Brazil, Australia, and the United States to profile fans and visit international conventions.

TREKKIES 2 features interviews with fans around the world, including an Englishman who transformed his flat into a starship and auctioned it on the Internet for $2 million, and original TREKKIES profilees like fan filmmaker Gabriel Koerner, and juror Barbara Adams, who gained notoriety by wearing a STAR TREK uniform to a court trial. TREKKIES 2 also features an interview with ENTERPRISE actor Dominic Keating ('Malcolm Reed'), attending a STAR TREK convention in Germany.

At the heart of the film is the first-ever STAR TREK fan convention in the Balkans in Serbia, which Nygard describes as "an historic event... and it was an emotional event as well. There were tears in our eyes when it came time to leave."

You can read the original report here.

Among the added features on the DVD release will be an audio commentary with Nygard, Crosby, and Leahy, composers J.J. Holiday and Billy Sullivan; 20 deleted scenes; two short films by TREK fans Brian Dellis and Gabriel Koerner; and clips from Nygard's SIX DAYS IN ROSWELL and SUCKERS.

The DVD of TREKKIES 2, which will retail for around $20, will be presented in its original full-screen format in Dolby Digital 5.1 and English Dolby Surround sound.

"The Big Goodbye," "Sarek," "Family," "The Drumhead" on disc one; "Darmok," "The Inner Light," "Tapestry" on disc two. The special set will also include a 42-minute space exploration documentary narrated by Patrick Stewart, FROM HERE TO INFINITY.

This Picard Collection would be great for those who don't have all 7 seasons of TNG on DVD already.

For those of us who do, this would more than likely be a waste of money.

How can $20 be a waste of money when you've already spent $500+ for all seven seasons of TNG? Besides, I think they already have that thing narrated by Patrick Stewart out on DVD for $10-$20.

That Picard set is worth it for just "Darmok" "Inner Light" and "Tapestry" alone. If the suggested price is $20, it'll likely be about $15 in a lot of stores.

"Serenity" is the movie "Star Wars" prequels wish they could be.

I get far more excited about paying a smaller amount of money for a select handful of episodes than I can about shelling out $100 per season on a box set ...
