STAR TREK: ENTERPRISE actor Scott Bakula stopped by the WAYNE BRADY SHOW on Wednesday, February 19th to promote this week's episode, "Doctor's Orders." In addition to discussing the episode, Bakula talked about the franchise in general and his QUANTUM LEAP career.

"A couple, but, basically, that's not true," Bakula said when Wayne asked if he is buddies with the other STAR TREK captains, according to a transcript provided by TrekWeb reader 'TRexx'. "That's not true. Actually, life has become kind of a 'Six Degrees of William Shatner' kind of thing; because, all of a sudden, everybody knows William Shatner now, except me... It's like, 'I saw Bill Shatner, he was driving in his car with his dog, yesterday, next to me.' 'Really? Yeah, I had Superbowl Sunday over at Bill Shatner's.'"

Bakula says he knows more of the NEXT GENERATION cast, since they are around the set more often. He says his own son has gotten hooked on TNG.

"And now I find out from my 8-year-old son... I came home the other night, and he says, you know, 'Dad, dad, I saw the old STAR TREK on TV. A rerun. I loved it'. I said, 'Really?' He said, 'Yeah, could you get me some copies of it?' I said, 'The original 'STAR TREK?' He said, 'No, no, the one with... they got the little thing on their shirt, like that.'"

"'And LeVar's on it. That's my favorite STAR TREK'. I said, 'Oh, thanks, Will'. So, of course, I go -- LeVar's directing -- and I go and tell him; and he's like, 'I love that boy, Will. Where's that boy Will? I love that kid.'"

When Wayne gave the audience a run-down of the current Xindi story arc, the actor joked about UPN's own lack of promotion for the series. "I really know a little too much, don't I?" Brady joked.

"No, no. I'm like, 'Man, this is more free ad time, which is more than we get on UPN!' So, this is good," Bakula responded.

Brady asked about the prospects of a QUANTUM LEAP feature film.

"The last time Don went and talked to Universal -- I'm just going to slam everybody today, since I'm sitting here -- the wizards at Universal marketing said that QUANTUM LEAP was not a marketable name... So. You know. You can't fight that. Because, obviously, they 'know.'"

When asked where he would "quantum leap" back in time to if given the possibility, Bakula said, "September 10th."

it seems Brady is a big fan of Trek, but you can tell he never watched DS9 cause he says... "You know, I think there needs to be a brother as a Captain in outer space. That hasn't happened yet. That hasn't happened yet. "

sisko was technically at first a commander, and then a captain and he was on the space station most of the time, not a real ship... so like if ur talking about a ship show, then technically, I guess, Brady is correct!

Well, knowing Trek fans, there's probably already a noticeable amount of corrections in The Wayne Brady Show in-box. (Not to mention some of the show's staff probably know it was a foul-up.) Look for a humorous retraction of some sort in the next few days.

Good Interview, But... | Report this post to moderator

Good interview, glad to hear Bakula tell it like it is! But I have to point out one thing:

"Wayne: You know, I think there needs to be a brother as a Captain in outer space. That hasn't happened yet. That hasn't happened yet."

*sigh* Does -nobody- acknowledge DS9? :-)

How come Bakula didn't correct him?

Because Bakula obviously holds a deep seeded rsentment of DS9, as many other Trek fans supposedly do.

??? I didn't see anything "obvious" at all. He didn't mention Voyager either. I think nothing was "obvious". It IS obvious that Bakula cares a great deal about Enterprise. All his actions and interviews show this. We should all follow his lead to help keep Enterprise on the air.

Or maybe, he just isn't familiar with DS9.

Well... considering that Jeffrey Combs played both Weyoun and Shran (and other characters in both DS9 and ENT and one character in VOY), some DS9 references should have surfaced somewhere - if anything, from Combs. Oh well...

          --------

"I think the show talked to people through the characters. They're stories that speak to the heart. They talk about love, they talk about friendship, they talk about loyalty, they talk about patriotism, exploration, curiosity, reaching out... And I think all those things still touch people. Even when you look at a 30-year old show, it still has something to say." - D.C. Fontana, Sci Fi Channel Special Edition TOS 1998

You're right. I had not thought about that. Also, I just remembered that Bakula, did mention DS9 when asked if any actors from previous series are going to show up on Enterprise. He did mention Casey Biggs and DS9 in the same sentence. So yeah, I guess it is kind of strange he didn't correct Brady.

I respect actors like Scott Bakula and Robert Beltran who aren't afraid to say it like it is.

I have to give him credit for his honesty. I wouldn't be surprised if he has had words with the Execs before about their problems.

Man, if even the actors can tell that UPN's not doing enough advertising, then you know something's wrong.

Of course, it's not like this'll shame them or anything.

Bakula ought to be in charge of the series. He seems to care about it and knows what fans want. And he also seems uncorrupted by the marketing goons that know nothing else but to punch numbers and see what might pop out. (ratings, marketability). Bakula has got some valuble instinct that the whole entertainment business seems to lack right now. Its all about numbers and accountability. I say feel the pulse of the public instead of trying to derive what they think they want from marketing math. Put some human thought back into the equation and Enterprise will be a better series. Bakula would be a great executive producer if they let him follow his gut.

True. Maybe we could get him to do the Romulan Wars. ;-)

I just remembered, he was in a meeting with the UPN execs earlier in the week...

Bakula may care, but there are so many more qualified people creatively to run Trek than him. What should be done is to give Bakula good scripts and do things to make Enterprise actually seem like it belongs in Trek canon.
