STAR TREK actor Wil Wheaton ('Wesley Crusher') has moved from much-derided actor to celebrity blogger and now to published author. The actor announces today the signing of a three-book deal with publisher O'Reilly & Associates, which will publish a new version of his short story collection DANCINE BAREFOOT, which sold 3,000 copies in self-publication.

"This is a very exciting relationship for me, for several reasons," the actor wrote on his official blog. "First, I am a huge geek, and without O'Reilly, I wouldn't know
HTML from LMNOP. I never would have been able to get Linux running, and
Perl would be one of the not-quite-as-good-as-Mrs.-Garrett replacements on 'Diff'rent Strokes.' Now, I'll be able to get my books into more stores than I ever was with my own Monolith Press. I can't wait to see how 'Dancing Barefoot' does when it's got a major publisher behind it."

In addition to DANCING BAREFOOT, which will be available soon, O'Reilly & Associates will publish JUST A GEEK, which "continues the story of Wheaton's
transformation from teen actor to grown-up writer, computer geek, actor,
husband, and stepfather," according to the publisher. In 2005, Wheaton will pen WIL WHEATON'S WEBSITE DESIGN, focused on the coding of his own site.

What a bunch of losers Wil bashers are | Report this post to moderator

So, Wil has a VERY successful book, a popular website, a bit of fame, and a happ home life, and people jump all over him because of his success. I think it amazing that these same losers don't jump on top of Shatner, Nimoy, Doohan, and all of those other former Trek actors who actually try to make a living in their post-Trek lives. You guys are so pathetic and without a doubt completely classless.

Wil's Books | Report this post to moderator

Wil probably would ignore the immature bile posted by sky.

I won't

Wil Wheaton did the impossible. He survived despite heavy odds (and pseudo-geek nitwits) to come into a life any of us would be LUCKY to have. I am so glad that a hero of mine as a kid could still be a hero to me as an adult. Wil would be the first to admit that the Wesley days are behind him and he is looking ahead. It's time for the "We hate Wesley and Wil" bunch to grow up and...how can I put this...hmmm...GET A LIFE!

Wheaton rules...those to dumb to get that fact suck.

We always found Wesley annoying on the show, and the anti-Wesley crowd has always been good for a laugh over the years. But after visiting Wheaton's site and reading his whiney, self-centered ramblings and left-wing views, I've come to dislike him for solid reasons. This dude needs to get over himself already.

What has he done? He left the show in Season 4 or 5? Since that time, he has done NOTHING. Come into what.......obscurity.

You my god I am going to throw up. You really do need to raise the bar and find better heros.

After reading all that crap you just posted about your love for him and thinking him as a hero (based on what I am afriad to ask). I would suggest you take your own advice and get a life.

My question still stands "Will who"???

You know Scorned (and what an oddly fitting name you have) it is comments like yours that make me glad I am not a vapid little snob like you because I don't measure success is the same shallow terms as you seem to. I don't think I would be too off base when I believe you might have one of those cheap Enterprise bridge mock-ups in your basement and a deep meaningful relationship with your hand.

I could espouse why I consider Wil a hero (there I said it again) but I really don't owe you any explanation and I have no reason to be ashamed of my choices. However I would like to offer one final retort that is tuned to your maturity and intelligence (For your sake I tried to keep the number of syllables to a minimum)

"I'm rubber and you're glue...whatever you say bounces off of me and sticks to you"

Oh yeah...Wil still rules...and you still suck

      Scorned who???

Wil is very well known in Internet circles such as Slashdot and Fark. They garner millions of viewers per week (or even day). Last I checked, Wil was working with VH-1 on a new show. O'Reilly wouldn't publish him if he wasn't a big enough name to sell books. Check your facts for once, mmmkay?

Oh, and since I've never responded to you or your mindless hating rants directly before on TrekWeb, let me just say it now: YOU'RE A FRIGGIN' MORON. I've yet to see you say anything good about anything. I think it's time to block you out.

I know you'll probably respond with some stupid retort, but too bad, you've already lost.

at least he admits he's a geek | Report this post to moderator

Who else but Wuss-ley would write a book called "Dancing Barefoot"? What is it about that title that is supposed to interest me in reading the book? Oh well, Weasel-boy has sold 3000 copies so either the title works anyway, or else he has 3000 fans, out of the millions that watched TNG. Must be that all the 5-year-old "Acting Ensign Wannabees" from 1987 are now old enough to buy their own books!

Only completely ignoring asshole would write such a criticism of Wheaton's book without even so much as reading beyond the title. I've read many passages from the book and I can tell you that Wheaton is an accomplished writer. Maybe you should save all the juvenile name calling for the 12 year-olds.

So my calling Wheaton by the traditional nicknames is "namecalling," but your calling me an asshole is different, huh? Look in the mirror, pal.

And you should be advised that in the publishing world, the title is everything. If potential buyers (like me) aren't grabbed by a book's title, they keep walking, so these decisions are made with great care. And since I (unlike you) have better things to read than celebrity biographies, unless the title or the author are interesting, I'm not even going to look further.

The real publishers of such works understand this and this is why Wheaton is being published by O'Reilly, which to my knowledge has never printed anything besides software manuals. They really picked a winner for their breakout title!

And as far as Wheaton being an "accomplished writer," he never even would have gotten the O'Reilly gig unless he was famous for being Trek's first and only "Acting Ensign." So the jury's still out on his publishing career. But I don't mean Wil Wheaton any ill, and if his writing is better than his five-year performance as "The Traveller's" boy lover, I wish him well!

Yes, I was parttaking in name-calling by saying you're an asshole because that is exactly how you made yourself look by attacking Wheaton's success.

You're also making a lot of assumptions based on fiction of your own making. You say I read celeb biographies. When did I make such a statement? You say that Wheaton's book needs a snappier title to be more successful. You fail to mention, however, that the first edition of his book sold out only three months after its release. Lastly, whether or not you wish to admit it, the fact that Wil is making a name for himself as a writer says that he has become accomplished in that field. Of course, I should take everything you say about this matter with the largest grain of salt considering your 'Traveler's lover boy' comment. Sky, you're a joke. Get over yourself.

Uh... yeah, That was just a tad hard dontcha think? He's grown and growing just like any other child actor and he's managed to make a name for himself without getting on drugs and destroying himself like so many other actors have in the past. Maybe you aughta give him just a little bit of a break. Besides, he's a Homestarrunner fan and that automatically scores him some cool points in my book. :) Peace dude!
