William Shatner Says Next "James T. Kirk" is Uncastable

Features

By TRexx / 14:57, 4 November 2006 / General Star Trek

Finally, months after Paramount had phoned Leonard Nimoy's agent to schmooze about the next Star Trek film (story), William Shatner and producer/writer J.J. Abrams have made first contact.

Rumor of a Shatner-Abrams encounter appeared on Internet blogs a couple of months ago, but at that time no meeting had occurred nor had one been scheduled, and Shatner's online statement to this effect met with some accusations of back-peddling from talebearers.

TV Guide has since caught Shatner for an exclusive interview in which a recent "long talk" with Abrams is mentioned.

By some unofficial accounts, the eleventh Star Trek movie will be a pre-Original Series story featuring Kirk and Spock. The question of who Shatner would nominate for the role of Kirk is answered with a wink: "I think it's essentially uncastable."

No recasting was necessary for a recent DirecTV commercial that reprises Captain Kirk of The Undiscovered Country. "They've got me CGI'd," Shatner admits. "They've got a computer program trying vainly to make me look younger."

Watch for an upcoming TV Guide Interviews & Features Q&A, in which Shatner dismisses a suggestion for a cameo in Abrams' Trek.

G4 TV played host to the Emmy Award winner this past Wednesday for a chat in Attack of the Show, during which Shatner says he doesn't pay attention to gossip of who might be hired as the next James T. Kirk.

STLtoday notes that Shatner will be in St. Louis this Sunday to open the 28th annual Jewish Book Festival, where he expects to sign copies of his latest novel, Captain's Glory. "I don't quite know what they want me to speak on, but usually I ramble anyway."

Shatner's game show will debut with a 90-minute special on Tuesday, November 14 at 9:30/8:30c, before slotting into Wednesdays at 8/7c. "It's called Show Me the Money. It's an ABC show and they seem to be happy with what they're seeing. And it may get a big push. There's so much more to it than I ever expected. It's quite complex just technically, but I think I can make it something more than a game show, so we're trying to do that."

ABC is also the place to be for the third season of Boston Legal, Tuesday nights at 10/9c.

The Boston Legal - Season 2 DVD boxed set can be ordered now in the U.S.A. and Canada.

Where's Dr. Leonard 'Bones' McCoy | Report this post to moderator

All I keep hearing about this movie is the special relationship between Kirk and Spock. If I remember correctly, Kirk is supposed to have unemotional Spock on one shoulder and the raw emotion of McCoy on the other. It's always been a Triumvirate of Kirk, Spock, and McCoy. Pull a leg out of a triumvirate and fall apart.

Oh boy! Let's hope not. Of course he was a pretty big thing when Titanic came out -- even I liked him. I must have stopped when he let everyone know he was a liberal. Well maybe that's my problem then.

Bill Shatner Is Right You Know. | Report this post to moderator

And William Shatner isn't just being arrogant in that statement (although there clearly is some). There is some truth in what he is saying. Unless the movie is going to be a remake of TOS (at which point, the gloves come off and we will see people like Ving Rhames auditioning for Kirk), Paramount's only hope is going with an unknown--an unknown that looks similar to Shatner when he was in his 20s. Just like Warner Bros. did with Superman Returns. As a matter of fact...that's exactly what they did. Christopher Reeve was too iconic as Superman to be easily replaced without serious thought. The same is true for Shatner and Kirk.

Yeah, I agree. I think it's a big mistake trying to find a "name" actor to play Kirk because he will come with his own reputation and style. An unknown is the only way to go. Remember that Sean Connery was an unknown when he made his first Bond, and Christopher Reeve was also a complete unknown when he did Superman. And the films made them into icons.

If Abrams wants the audience watching this prequel to focus on the CHARACTERS then he can't have them focusing upon the ACTORS. If Ben Affleck were to be cast as Spock (per one of the many rumors out there), no one will pay attention to the character; it'll all be about Affleck being cast as Spock. Ditto for any of the others.

I guess the bottom line for me is if Paramount insists on star power for the new Trek film rather than letting the story and people's interest in the Trek brand drive the film's success, it means that they have little confidence in the film and the franchise. That doesn't mean they can't get some big name to play the villain or have a cameo (Connery was supposed to be Sybok in STV, remember?), but when it comes to casting the "uncastable" (to borrow Kirk's tongue-in-cheek but accurate phrase) IMO they need to have a clean slate to work with, otherwise the risks of failure are greater than the risks of dealing with unknown actors.

Apparently the only thing the superman returns actor does right is looking like Christopher Reeve.

I think the James Bond series handles this better. They don't try to make James Bond look exactly the same, each Bond is distinctive in his own rights.

I think Leo would be cool.

I don't like it when they cast unknowns because you have no idea what to expect

"Risk... Risk is our business. That's what this starship is all about. That's why we're aboard her."

      --Captain James T. Kirk

I like Shatner - Pompous Maximus himself. But at the end of the day - he's a fucking actor. And there will be a time another fucking actor will portray him in the role of JAMES KIRK because it's an entertainment product, STAR TREK, and someone will find a way to tell the stories of this franchise's most revered era to date.

Who knows how Abrams & Co will handle the Kirk issue - we'll all find out within two years.

I am glad to have watched TOS when it originally aired as a very small child, and later its movies in my twenties. And I can accept another actor in the role because that's what happens in favorite fictional stories: new actors take on the roles of our favorite characters. If that's the case of ST:XI - okay, make it a good one, JJ.

With all due respect, Capricorn Two, I disagree. I am 36 years old, so I also discovered TOS as a child and the movies in my twenties. For me, Shatner is Kirk and Kirk is Shatner. Nimoy is Spock and so forth.

This is not the same situation than Batman and James Bond, characters created for comic books and literature and subjects to several interpretations. Shatner co-created Kirk in my opinion and the character is linked to him in a way that is unparalled in the movie industry.

I will give Abrams prequel a chance, but for me it will not be my TOS, the TOS I love.

All I said is that unknown isn't the way I would go.

I know all the trekkies (I'm not, trust me) want an unknown. I don't want William Shatner to reprise the title role like some of you (dillusional) treekies want.

They didn't go with an unknown for the role of Batman for Batman begins, Christian Bale, that was an awesome choice for that. And I think that would work here too.

I get the feeling you assumed that I was a TOS fan who prefered Shatner, well the answer to that is that I'm not a fan of TOS, but I watched all the movies, but I couldn't care less about Shatner.
