EXILE REVIEW: another dazzling episode that was too short (mild spoilers) | Report this post to moderator

In short, This episode ranked right up there with Anomaly. The writing in this episode was nothing short of a miracle. I complained about the lack of tension in last week's episode, but that seemed to be fixed this week. They have managed to create a very intense episode without one battle scene or hand to hand combat footage.

We Basically get an episode based on the cause of the Anomalies present in the expanse. I won't give it away, but the Spheres play a major role. Now, for all of you Continuity HOunds who whine and complain about the lack of mention of the Expanse in previous series which takes place further in the future: There is a mention in this episode which gives weight to the most plausible reason as to why there was no mention. It was a comment that Archer made. I am sensing that by that comment along, the writers were signaling a message to the fans that is saying, that they hear us and not to worry, because they are getting on top of things.

Now, to the A plot. The whole Hoshi ordeal really didn't get intriguing until the end. Wait, there was one scene, with Hoshi and the character, in the middle of the episode that was breath taking. The writers have managed to create a very interesting character whom, I get the feeling, will return in future episodes. Hoshi did some OK acting in this episode, which brings me to another point. She really has undergone a significant character change hasn't she? I mean, in 2 years, she has changed from this scary claustraphobic space newbie, to going out of her way to convince ARcher to leave her on a planet for days alone with an alien that she doesn't know or trust. I found that odd, but they do touch on that issue within the ep. It was, however, not to my satisfaction. I wish they had went further into it.

The direction was very good, but I take away a point for one early scene where the camera was so close on Hoshi, I could have sworn that she was holding the damn thing uo to her face as she was moving. I suppose that is a cinematography issue. I wish this episode had been a 2-parter, though the ending suggests that next week's episode will be exciting. I mean, I was watching this episode in suspense, when I looked at the time, and it dawned on me that it was about to end. It should have been at least 3 minutes longer or made into a direct 2 -parter.

I once again applaud the writers fpr they have managed to take a "quiet" episode and turn it into something very intense.

Final Rating: 8.5/10
