Impulse -- Another Awesome Episode | Report this post to moderator
By: Merlinus Ambrosius (Odo's file, contact) @ 00:06:28 on Oct 09, 2003

Season three just keeps getting better and better (discounting the rather average "Evolution"). Impulse is another great mystery/horror episode akin to season 2's "Dead Stop".

The storyline was different from what we've seen before in a trek episode. Usually its the Vulcans who are immune to "whatever"....this time, it was different. Also missing from the typical trek outline is the "hunky-dory" ending for the afflicted aliens. If this was TNG, the episode would have ended with the vulcan crew being restored to full health, with an added comment about how everything turns out great. Not so with Impulse. It takes everything that trek has done before....and does something different with it.
Another thing the episode did well was setting up some character developement for T'Pol, forcing her to come to grips with emotions, even if it was only for a short while. Perhaps this will be followed up on later.
While the episode did tend to borrow from Resident Evil, it still managed to make itself unique. My only real complaint for the episode was the rather frenetic camera pacing during the intro...I really don't like it when they speed up the frame rate, it feels like someones taking a cheese grater to my spine.
But at any rate, the special affects were once again top notch, and the music is coming along nicely, underscoring the action bits with just the right amount of feeling.

Overall: 8.5/10
