"Impulse," flashy but empty entertainment. (Spoilers) | Report this post to moderator

Thanks to BitTorrent, the high tech cousin to MaxPower's hillybilly satellite dish, I've just finished 'Impulse.' As far as the plot goes, this episode doesn't really do much. However, 'Impulse' was nicely shot, and the Vulcan 'zombie' makeup was quite well done. However, I can't really say much more than that. I was entertained, to be sure, but there wasn't any real meat to this episode other than the fantastic effects and fairly strong tension. Blalock began to grate on my nerves and her acting seemed strained, which really took away from this episode because so much of the tension rested on her ability to carry off the loss of control believably. The rest of the acting was competent, but there was no real 'stand-out' performance here.

As far as important arc material goes, 'Impulse' adds another snag for the crew of the Enterprise. The hope of Trilliem D to protect the crew is cut short when Phlox realizes that the very mineral that would protect Enterprise is what drove the Vulcans mad. This will certainly make things difficult for the crew as they proceed deeper into the Expanse, but I think that we have to see some very strong consequences of the continuing anomalies for this development to matter, because until now, the anomalies have only been annoyances.

Don't get me wrong, 'Impulse' was not a bad episode, but it wasn't particularly earth-shattering either. I give it 6.5/10.
