Sex in Star Trek... | Report this post to moderator
By: Chronos Blade (Odo's file, contact) @ 00:33:19 on Oct 03, 2003

Ok, I've finally snapped! I'm so sick of hearing about how sex is a cheap ratings gag and that Enterprise is so horrible for putting it in the series. Maybe I'm unjust in thinking this way, I doubt it though.

I see complaints from people saying something along the lines of "I won't let my kids watch Enterprise anymore because it is just too trashy." Ok fine, but then they say that none of the series befor it had anything of this kind in it. That is where I get annoyed...

Let's start with TOS: Keep in mind that this took place in the 60's and likely pissed people off a hell of alot more than Enterprise does now. Kirk managed to get his shirt off every other episode and slept around with many different women. The female crew wore mini skirts (Dare I say the 60's equivelent to the catsuit!?). On several occassions, female aliens used their sexuality to lure men to their doom. It delt with the first interacial kiss ever shown on TV... Ok no biggie now but certainly controversial then, today we've replaced interacial with homosexuality.

TNG: In the first season, we had "The Naked Now". Look up the synopsis of that episode if you don't know why I'm mentioning it! The actress who played Tasha yar left the series because she knew she was on the show to look like a nice piece of ass. We had an episode that dealt with Data having sex. Riker seemed to be the Kirk character of TNG aka womanizer. TNG was the cleanest of the shows.

DS9: We have the female on female kiss, Dax quite frquently talked about sexual topics and was know to play the field, women wore tight suits quite frewuently in Quark's. It showed Jadzia in bed, barely covered by a blanket, after having sex with Worf. Nana Visoter had the chance to play the alternate bi-sexual version of her Kira character once per season and she also played a bond type chick in "Our Man Bashir". They always made reference to Quark's dirty holodeck programs. These are just a few of the sexual undertones that were scattered all throught DS9. DS9 was by far the most sexual of the trek shows until Enterprise.

VOY: Didn't watch the show enough to remember any specific.

Enterprise: OK so here is the show which has had the most sexuality in it so far. We have had near nudity, not a first for Star Trek but getting more reveling as time goes on. Still in an age where full nudity is allowed on netwrok television, I think people should be thankful, if they are sex on trek haters, that Enterprise doesn't go all the way. We have had some tasteless decon scenes but no more tasteless than the constant exposure of Kirk in TOS; It is all done in the same spirit. They treat sex itself, with the same amount of tact as any of the previous Trek series have.

Nemisis actually had a sex scene in it, whih is something Enterprise hasn't done. First Contact had the slutty borg queen dressed in a tight suit trying to seduce data. Insurrection had the bath scene and mention of boobs. This all came from the beloved TNG franchise, the same franchise that people seem to remember as some sterile sexless bland tv show. I just don't get it. Enterprise by todays standards is no worse than TOS was by the 60's standards...
