I am one of ENT harshest critics.

The show's first and second season were an utter disaster _ among the worst television I've ever seen.

That having been said, last night's episode was a major step in the right direction. I am honestly shocked. It wasn't so much that the plot was especially inventive _ its the fact that they are clearly beginning to fix many of the shows fundamental problems. (though they still have a LONG way to go.)

1. Finally, the Enterprise crew seemed competent without having all the answers. They showed skill, courage and EXPERTISE in their respective fields. This is the first show where I actually believed that this is a crew of Earth's finest officers _ not a bunch of bunglers who are less competent than the highly trained people with whom I work everyday.

2. Archer actually had a focus for his intensity as well as some important choices to make. This is the VERY first time
that I believed he was making real command decisions _ not just decisions that were a story device or forced from a need to advance the plot. And FINALLY, he isn't making the same decisions PICARD would have made _ the writers have taken a step toward fulfilling the idea that this is the first captain, pushed into an extreme situation. His decisions WERE THE STORY, not just carried along BY THE STORY. I may not like everything he does, but at least he's doing something. At least the writers are telling an Archer story that seems intellectually genuine!!!! Its far better than the previous ENT drivel that had the emotional, do-gooder Archer leaving an entire race to die from a disease for which they have the cure. (Don't create a character and then live in mortal fear of being true to his personality! Let him learn hard lesson, intead of forcing him to spout the Prime Directive decades before it exsists. The ENT story lies within letting Archer BE ARCHER _ not forcing him to be Picard!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

3. Finally the ENT crew fights with some degree of craftiness and effectiveness. Again, it doesn't make one damn bit of sense that in our time we have Navy Seals, yet on the first deep space ship into the unknown, we have a bunch of maroons. Now we have tough people, who actually seem like they might hold their own against people from OUR TIME!

This was a decent hour of television. Admittedly, I will not become a regular watcher of ENT. The show still has a lot to prove. Frankly, there are other competing programs that have proven themselves.
But this is a start. If the whole season is at this level, I will begin to think about returning as a viewer.
