Anomaly 9/10 | Report this post to moderator

Howdy ya'll! This is my first post here but I have been a long time reader. After watching this episode of Enterprise I felt compelled to throw in my two cents. I read a lot of the opinions presented on this board and respect all of them, everyone has the right to like or dislike a show. I happen to enjoy Enterprise quite a bit and I am a huge Trek fan. I liked TNG for the United nations optimistic feel of the show and found DS9 to be gripping not only as a action/war series but as a character study. Voyager I never had much use for but did enjoy it from time to time and now we have Enterprise which I enjoy a great deal more than Voyager. I do understand all the complaints about the series ranging from the sometimes poor writing to the 'Archer Capture of the Week" scenarios. All of the series have had rocky starts and I think it will only get worse as more Trek series continue because they have such great shoes to fill but Enterprise is finally shaping into what could be a great series and I have liked what I have seen so far this season. (I know we're two episodes in but I just have a good feeling)

Sorry about the babbling but now you know where I'm coming from. Now on with the review!

Anomaly 9/10

Where do I start? I enjoyed the hell out of this episode. I guess I will start with the tension level. Enterprise has never really been good at nailing the feeling of tension. Something always seems to betray it whether it is the poor music, poor acting (All about Bakula), or the poor f/x (rare I know but sometimes crappy... The Xindi attack on Earth??? Laughably bad!). Fortunately, this episode had none of the above; the score was great, the f/x were astounding, and Bakula actually had me enjoying Archer for a change. Granted the character is still very flawed but for once it was a good kind of flaw. Badass, not dumbass... The feel of this episode was just right.

As for the other characters, like others have stated, Travis and Hoshi actually have screen time here. All the major characters get some development with T'pol actually having the least for once. This shouldn't come as a shock but Connor Trinneer is very good in the little screen time he was allotted. The continuity is excellent, with Trip seeming worn out from lack of sleep and being overworked. It may seem like a small detail but it made me smile to see that they are paying close attention to what they have established so far in the last two episodes.

The direction was excellent as was the cinematography. The camera moved much like it would in a David Fincher movie, Panic Room comes to mind. The f/x were movie quality and left me with a sense of awe at what I was watching. The script was very well written and paid close attention to the established Xindi arch.

I literally felt joy while watching this episode. It was tense, funny, heartfelt, and beautiful. The last scene left me wanting more which is exactly what this series needed and I can't wait for next weeks episode.

Sorry if this was a bit long winded, I will try to keep it shorter in the future but it isn't often that an episode hits me the way this one did. Maybe it was just me, maybe others will share my opinion of the episode. I don't really care either way. I was entertained for an hour and that means that Enterprise is doing it's job masterfully.
