'The Xindi' provide intrigue and the set-up for a great season | Report this post to moderator

It's been three months, and I have been waiting patiently for the season premiere of 'Enterprise.' I purposely tuned out all the spoilers and previews, hoping to go in cold, much like I did when 'Enterprise' premiered.

So does 'The Xindi' deliver the goods? In a word, yes. It's all there, good characterizations from the actors we know, and some good stuff from the new guys. The marines aren't very detailed characters as of yet, but there are hints there for good things to come. I hope that the conflict between Malcolm and the Major does continue, it would be a shame to waste the tension that both actors portrayed quite well. The story is straightforward, but open-ended, posing more questions than it answers. The pacing was tight, and the action sequences well-executed.

The focus has changed for 'Enterprise.' It's very obvious that action will be a major part of S3, which doesn't concern me in the slightest. TOS was an action-adventure series, and I don't see why ENT can't do the same thing. Bakula was good as Archer, with only a slightly discordant rant at the beginning of the episode. Trip's trouble sleeping and his short fuse are played out fairly well, and have the potential for good drama if used well. T'Pol managed to come off as only slightly annoyed, which is a major achievement, but the final scene between her and Trip was fairly unecessary insofar as there was really no need for shirts to come off to perform the Vulcan Sleep Pinch(tm).

This episode, much like 'The Expanse' depends on what follows to determine exactly how good it is. If Bermaga and co. capitalize on the great start that they've presented here, 'The Xindi' will mark a turning point in the course of 'Enterprise,' giving it a purpose and drive. If the following episodes fall flat, then 'The Xindi' will be yet another painful reminder of missed opportunities on 'Enterprise.'

Only time will tell.
