Why Star Trek must die | Report this post to moderator
By: Beamer (Odo's file, contact) @ 02:18:27 on Aug 11, 2003

The criticism that Enterprise is receiving demonstrates the fundamental flaw in the current state of Trek. Star Trek simply can’t compete with Star Trek anymore. Since the revival days of the 1970’s, there has been an almost reverential devotion to the series. From television to theater, there has been a constant orgy of delight, excitement, and idealism. One could venture to say that when Gene died, Star Trek died, but that would be overly simplistic.

The truth of the matter is...Star Trek has gotten old.

While we could debate when middle age set in, Enterprise comes in a geriatric time for the Star Trek saga. The desire to explore the birth of the federation (if THAT will ever be dealt with in time, who knows) could be likened to the desire of an old man or women to relive their youth prior to death.

Star Trek needs a rebirth.

There can be much justified debate about how that is best accomplished, but the fact remains…Star Trek is simply unable to keep up with Star Trek any longer. The expectations are too high, the writing is too anemic, the casting is to “gimmicky” (if that was EVER possible), and the production is now bound by conventionalism rather than by idealism. Star Trek is old. I never thought I would see the day when I would admit that, but then again, how many of us spend time envisioning the death of loved ones. No matter how much we may push reality aside, death comes to all…even Star Trek. How long it can survive on life support has more to do with the desire of the family then the health of the patient. As long as there is the sentimental desire on the part of fandom to keep Trek kicking, there will be Star Blech. But the day is fast coming when even that will be seen as just to morbid.

A day will come when the masses will once again cry for a faithful Star Trek show. It might be a movie. It might be a television show. It might be some presently unpredictable manifestation. But whatever it will be, it will be some time into the future. Perhaps it will only be when all of present fandom can remember the past 40 years as a distant memory, but it will revive.

Good ideas always do.

Until then, let’s just enjoy the senior years of Star Trek and fondly bid it farewell as it slips into the night. Let’s just hope for a peaceful passing; one that is not beset with pain and agony. And when it passes, people will be able to attend the countless memorials (such as here) and repeat the incessant chant, “hey, you remember when….” Memories are always better in the past tense anyway.

All good things…
