BBS Usage Policies, Revised Edition | Report this post to moderator
By: Steve Krutzler (Odo's file, contact) @ 18:19:13 on Sep 03, 2003 | Edit History (3)

BBS Usage Policies and Expectations, Revised 9/3/03

1. Please post all threads on the proper board:

A) General sci-fi, STAR TREK, entertainment, and off-topic threads not likely to generate heated opinion on the Shore Leave forum

B) ENTERPRISE threads on the Suliban Helix forum

C) Feature Film threads on the Feature Films forum

D) Books, products, conventions, fan fiction, fan art threads on the Divine Treasury forum

E) Questions/problems about the BBS or TrekWeb, inquiries into deleted posts, or suggestions/feedback in the Ready Room forum

F) Contentious topics of a political, religious, current event or otherwise controvsial nature likely to prompt strong opinions on the Bajoran Fire Caves forum.

2. Deletions. The moderator delete any post that meets the below criteria:

A) Posts that mock other users without any true content to them.

B) Posts that are continuations of another topic, currently in a thread that was posted within a day or two (using discretion). Numerous posts within the same 24 hour period about the same specific topic should be posted in the original thread.

Bb) Posts that exceed a limit of 3 top-level threads in a 24 hour period. Typically only enforced against repeat and blatant abusers and not legitimate posts that may occasionally exceed this limit.

C) Posts directed to specific users. E.g. "Hey Cyrmo, got a question for ya"

D) Posts with profanity other than "ass" or "bitch" in the topic line of the thread.

E) Clear troll posts; that is, posts containing inflammatory remarks about ethnic groups, threats of harm, posts containing another BBS member's personal contact information, or other egregious posts as the moderator determines based on the common community standards.

3. Posting content policies:

A) Please do not use all CAPS in your title at any time for any reason. This is considered rude.

B) Please do not include foul language other than "ass" or "bitch" in thread TOPICS (this includes the word "shit").

C) Please do not post more than three top-level posts in a row within an hour period, even on different topics.

D) Please refrain from jumping on new users if they slightly violate these rules. Inform them of their mistake and move on.

E) Please refrain from slandering or libeling other users, or engaging in intensely disrespectful communication. If someone posts a political opinion that you disagree with, please feel free to say so. Users are expected to do so in a manner that contains the same courtesy and respect of face-to-face communication.

F) Posts deliberately inflammatory or disrespectful toward another member in an antagonistic manner such that they are reasonably expected to encourage subsequent replies that are equally inflammatory, disrespectful and without substance will be deleted at moderator's discretion, and action may be taken against the poster as described below. What posts meet these criteria is entirely up to determination by TrekWeb but can be generally understood as antagonistic attacks on other members.

G) No commercial posts. Posting links to auctions or other sites are permitted if accompanied by a valid, substantive post. However, posts that only are meant to advertise will be removed to avoid annoying the TrekWeb community. All posts are subject to the discretion of the moderator(s). For far more effective advertising to BBS readers, please check out TrekWeb's Promenade Classifieds (Promenade menu above).

4. Moderation and disciplinary procedures

A) An anonymous moderator or moderator(s) will be assigned to routinely check the BBS for compliance with these policies. Moderator's will operate under the nickname "Moderator" and can be reached via email at moderator@startrekbbs.com in extreme cases. Moderators may move threads at their discretion or take disciplinary action against offending users as follows:

B) Severe violation, in the discretion of the moderator(s), will result in a temporary suspension of a user's account for 7, 14, 30, 60, or 90 days depending on the severity of the violation and community disturbance. During this time, suspended users cannot post, edit, or alter their account settings. E-mail notifications of suspensions and re-activations will be sent to the offending user. A notification of a suspension will be posted by the moderator in the Ready Room forum so that other members may be aware of the action taken.

C) Repeated severe violation may result in a user's complete ban from posting, editing, or altering their account settings. Suspensions and bans are enforced on an account and IP address basis.

D) IP tracking. The BBS will now log the IP address of every member when accessing the forums. This will assist in maintaining disciplinary action against offending users.

E) Blocking. Rather than waste time and resources by having moderators score posts and/or delete offending posts routinely, we opt for a self-imposed BBS moderation system here. Logged-in users may block any other user, which will prevent their threads and replies from appearing in the thread list or inside threads. This allows users to self-moderate rather than shift the responsibility to BBS staff. For more information on this feature, please read the documentation: http://startrekbbs.com#blocking/.

F) Report violating posts. Please use the "Report this post to a moderator" link located to the right of every post topic to send an email with a direct link to the post in question and an optional message to a moderator for review.

These policies are intended to help the BBS run smoother and provide an expectation of behavior norms.
