Sure, everyone has posted their opinions, and I hate to keep beating a dead horse to death, but I wanted to state what inspired me/I liked about Nemesis.
1. I missed out on the hype. I was out of the country and out of contact with media on a volunteer ministry. All I knew was a character was going to die. (had no idea it would be Data, and was shocked [plus, I kept hoping it wasn't true]). As I saw the slogan "A generation's final journey begins" I had pangs of fear, and did not want to see enter the theatre because it would be the end of it all. Nonetheless, I went, again, and again, and again, and again--I dragged family, I dragged friends. I argued with non trekkies about why they should see it.
2. I started with goosebumps/near tears at the beginning speach of Picard at the beginning. Very nice, very touching. I wish I had seen more development witht the guests, but that's okay. I have always had a crush on Troi, she looked beautiful, and it was nice to see Riker moving on, though sad, and Picard asking him to reconsider--interesting and wonderful! when all is said and done, Picard does not want him to go! And Riker and Troi's look and nod, chemistry!
3. The discovery of B4. EDGE OF MY SEAT! Was it Lore? How could it be? Data shot him in Descent Partn II! But then again, he always tends to pop up again! And how funny, "why is your shiny?" It took a while for me to trust B4, because what if it is Lore pretending, I thought!
4. What a surprise! When Data saved Picard! I thought it was B4, but it wasn't!
5. Picard--the fatherless. Then in the middle of the movie I realized, Data has been like a son to Picard. Picard has mentored and defended Data, and I truly feel a father and son relationship existed. Sadly, we lost some of its fruiton becasue of the cutting of the "chataue Picard" scene. What pain, what emptiness...His son, Data, died--sacraficing himself for his "father"
6. The philosophy behind Shinzon. Would Picard have acted the same way? Clearly genetics and environment would dictate such, if they influence our personality. But is their a human soul that determines our personality/nature? Is Picard's soul such that he would behave differently, or are we slaves to environment and genetics. I have philosophized about how Picard would be if in the same situation, and I still have not decided. I think the thought scared Picard. I enjoyed that. Would I? Me, the moral pillar of Star Trek, who never sacrifices my goodness, be evil? Is Shinzon therefore responsible for his actions? Or is he a victim?
7. The psycho rape! Wow! The setting was perfect, better music could not have been chosen. So intense, especially given my crush on Troi.
8. Loved Shinzon's pulling himself on the stake closer to Picard, but Picard's pause at Shinzon's death. AMAZING! He sat tre Motionless. He froze! Fearless Picard. So tortured that he would not act. Were it not for Datas arrival, Picard and The enterprise would have all been destroyed, because of his own misaction. How touching. That silence touched me.
9. Data's sudden death. My jaw hit the ground. How wonderful. Not a big dramatic slow death. No goodbye, nothing. Tears flowed as I felt the pain of the cast. Especially Deanna. When Will entered and Deaanna said, "Its Data." Or when deanna broke down emotionally into Will;s arms at the farewell. Also, I love how they thought Picard was dead, but felt relief when they turned to see him, only to realize data was gone.
10. The "funeral." Very nice.
11. B4 humming blue skies. the tears came back. I don't think B4 necessarily means we will get data back ala Spock.
12. The score, and the mood both at the end of the film. I did not want to leave the theatre. I moved slowly. The scored is rivaled only by that of Insurrection
12. I loved how the only way to track the scimitar was supernatural--not scientific, but a big sacrafice for Troi! How painful! (Also, I loved Picard ordering her to continue duty)
13. Picard's speach, "Like a thousand other commanders preparing for battle. . ."
14. The theme of the movie, to me, "In the end what you have or have not done is not important. It is what you have become. That is what defines our humanity. The ability to become something more tommorrow than we are today. To aspire." THat has inspired me to live my life better. To improve. And also to not judge others on their past, but on what they are becoming.
15. Picard's frazeled state when the Romulun contacts him. her says on screen. Then he starts saying, they don't know oour procedures, yadda yadda, oh, just open the doors! He is truly very touched.
16. The romulun peace! I loved, "You have earned a friend in the romulun empire, today captain, the first of many I hope!" Goosebumps (even now as I type), and a tear in the eye! HOW BEAUTIFUL!
It truly went where no man or movie has gone before, ushering in a new age for the federation! How wonderful in a time when picard recently said, in the end of Insurection, that these were difficult times. At what better time, than when the federation is struggling, than to begin relations with Romulan Star Empire! A new aliance for the galaxy! PEACE! (All in preparation for new enemies that may prove to be larger than their collective selves.)
Over all, I was so moved by this movie. The wonderful play between light and darkness. The only other ST movie that moved me so much philosophically was Insurrection. So, among the money made by Nemesis, a share of it was mine. Several Movie tickets, the DVD at midnight May 19, the movie poster, the soundtrack. I loved it. Great movie, quite possibly my favorite. I can't count how many times I have rewatced it, and I still catch something new and wonderful.
So, bash me, the movie, or my opinions all you want, you won't be able to change the fact, that I for one, loved the movie. Whether it bombed or not, I liked it. whether other fans hated or not, I loved it.
