Absurdly Ridiculous
By Beefies

This lawsuit seems absurd on the face of it. A game developer working with a pop culture property has to understand the risk they're taking. Sometimes you hitch your wagon to the wrong star: for every wildly successful game based on Star Wars or Spider-Man, there's another game developer who lost a fortune betting on a turkey. There is very little accounting for, and even less predicting, the public's fickle taste. No production company can guarantee that its product will remain popular and profitable forever.

However, I appreciate the "lighting a fire under Viacom's butt" aspect of the suit. This is language they understand: when the game developers, toy manufacturers, book publishers, etc. start turning away from Trek, it hits them where they hurt. The Trek cash cow has always been in Merchandising, and a perceived threat in that arena--which Paramount and Viacom have taken for granted for at least 20 years--will raise some eyebrows. This could lead to interesting developments, including some that fans wouldn't like (such as Viacom deciding to cut its losses).
