Oh my god, some people are really gullible.
By The Noble Robot

This "rumor" is next to impossible. Firstly, the iPhone is simply a metallic rectangle, I'd hardly call that a patented prop design. It's more likely that the communicator (or PADD) props simply resemble (or are even inspired by) the iPhone.

Second, since the user interface of the device would have to be redesigned anyway for the film, it is actually cheaper to composite video screens in post production than it would be to design a brand new psudo-OS to run even a dummy display on the device. And if you wanted the interface to use the touch screen, forget about it. I know this is a big budget film, but c'mon, that's just a colossal waste of money.

Besides, since it's a frickin film, there's no reason for any of the features of the iPhone would need to be functioning, including the cool touch interface, which can be easily simulated,

So why spend $400 (plus modification costs) per prop on nothing more than a shiny rectangle that, if recognizable, is obviously from 250 years ago??
