One problem with this great episode
By ScottN

Never posted here before, but this is one of my all time favorite episodes, but there is one inexplicable problem with it that to this day I am surprised did not get changed. Perhaps others might have a differing opinion of it, so I'm laying it out to other Trek fans.

The big choice of this episode wasn't really a choice. Because the Klingons were winning the war, if the Enterprise C stayed, so what? They live a little longer and end up getting clocked by the Klingons. The choice to go back was painfully obvious--a no brainer as it would save lots of lives and avoid a war the Federation was losing.

The fix, which would have been much more Trek and much more in Rodenberry's vision, was that the Federation should have, after a long struggle, been winning the war. Picard's choice would have been whether it was worth avoiding the fight, or winning it. The choice to "give peace a chance" rather than to win the war--to save lives and take a chance on an uncertain future rather than stay with the safe knowledge that despite millions of lives, the Federation would win--now THAT to me would have been the choice that made for truly compelling television.

As much as I love this episode, that very easy fix has really stuck in my craw to this very day. Like to know what others think.

Thanks for reading,

ScottN
