Names Vs. Craft
By c.p.

I think there are two ways to look at the casting:

1. It's a cast that falls short of a better option that includes so-called "A-list" actors who bring their names to the project and maybe talent.

2. It's a cast of actors who are good at their craft and the "A-list" star in this movie is the story itself.

I wasn't watching a shipwrecked man in "Cast Away", I was watching Tom Hanks shipwrecked. I wasn't watching Ethan Hunt, international spy, I was watching Tom Cruise, international spy. I wasn't watching Achilles, Greek legend, I was watching Brad Pitt.

However, I WAS watching Hector, Trojan prince, not Eric Bana. I WAS watching John F. Kennedy during the Cuban Missile Crisis, not Bruce Greenwood.

Abrams seems to be picking character actors who will embody the roles they will play in this story. If the story is good and their parts are written well, then I think Bana and Greenwood will pull it off better than most A-list names--if quality is what we're looking for rather than just a name.
