Kirk/Spock "Meeting" at SFA - Temporally & MultiGramatic
By Michael X. Maelstrom

Hail Spartacus,

re:

Pardon me, but how could a young Kirk meet a young Spock?

Spock was on the Enterprise under Pike!

True, that does require an explanation.

One could argue that Spock was an excellent student :)

Additionally, an explanation is provided to account for this in the SFA novel: Crisis on Vulcan, Starfleet Academy No 1.

The Explanation: While accompanying his father on a diplomatic mission, a young Spock met Captain Robert April and more importantly here, First Officer Christopher Pike aboard the Enterprise.

It was purportedly Spock's "positive" meeting with 1st Officer Pike and the Enterprise crew (who easily accepted him as part of their extended family) that led to his decision to go to Starfleet Academy (instead of The Vulcan Science Academy).

Not canon of course, but it's an explanation for the Pike/Spock seemingly long-term bond.

Finally, according to www.StarTrek.com there is no discrepancy issue on the Kirk/Spock SFA attending years, it unambiguously states that,

1. Kirk Attended Starfleet Academy: 2250-2254
2. Spock Attended Starfleet Academy: 2249-2253

So, their time there does overlap.

Meaning that if Abrams wants to focus on Kirk-Spock at Starfleet Academy, it's consistent with StarTrek.com's established timeline.

Even so, you may be right, it doesn't mean that Trek XI will be an SFA Kirk-Spock movie.

if you look at the original article at Variety, it doesn't actually state that Trek XI will center on Starfleet Academy with Spock and Kirk _attending_ together.

That was an _assumption_ made after the Variety article on Trek XI largely because the wording is grammatically nebulous and/or misleading, or at least, can be read in several ways.

id est. the original Variety news item stated,

Quote:
(the) Project, to be penned by Abrams and "MI3" scribes Alex Kurtzman and Roberto OrciRoberto Orci, will center on the early days of seminal "Trek" characters James T. Kirk and Mr. Spock, including their first meeting at Starfleet Academy and first outer space mission. - Variety

Though "Kirk-Spock Attending SFA together" is one possible interpretation, it could also be much more literal, meaning it involves Spock and Kirk _running into eachother_ / their first meeting on the SFA campus.

(as opposed to the film centering on them going to school together there at the same time)

The "SFA first meeting" aspect could be an extremely minor plot point, that was blown out of proportion by misinterpretation (interestingly that would explain Abrams followup statement that the story circulating was not exactly correct)

ie. The _main focus_ might not be Spock-Kirk at SFA, but rather might actually be on their first outer space mission together.

Guess we'll 'ave to wait and see what Abrams is cooking.

*pause*

I hate waiting.

Michael X.
