The Soul of Star Trek
By TRexx

If there's one thing this news demonstrates it's that the "knowing Paramount, it'll suck" argument has had the wind taken out of its sails.

Some of us had an early sense that Paramount was waiting out Berman's contract, but no one could know that the franchise would get a J.J. Abrams to produce and direct.

It's fairweather to admire Abrams' past and present work but heckle his unborn triumphs.

My hope is that Abrams can wield a TOS-like mastery of allegory, archetype, and ability to meld intelligent humor with drama. And a worthy villain is a must. I'd be disappointed to see a contrived "reality" opera (like Moore's BSG), as that could time-stamp the product, and make it tedious to those whose psyche doesn't resonate with today's fashionable gloom.
