Enterprise's Future
By SirTrekker

I'm not really surprised that Brannon Braga thinks that Star Trek is still a bankable and viable franchise. Of course he would. He needs to stay employed, and he and his partner in chaos, Rick Berman, have rarely paid attention to fans like us who see where the problems are and have valid ideas for change. I think Leonard Nimoy made a very valid point; you don't need a premise of Earth being in peril in order to make a compelling storyline. You need writers and directors willing to take risks with the characters, no matter what the setting.

I am actually looking forward to tonight's premiere; I really want to give this new season a chance. Despite all my bitching about Star Trek, I'm still a fan, and I'll still hold out hope for better things for the franchise. However, I think Enterprise is largely screwed anyway, thanks to the bonehead idea to schedule Enterprise opposite Smallville. Whoever thought of that deserves a very enthusiastic slap upside the head. Smallville (another one of my favorites), while it's had its share of substandard episodes, has been praised for solid and compelling storytelling, and taking chances with the previously established origins of Superman. It's also one of the WB's highest-rated shows. So, what does UPN (home of the Mullets, the most ridiculous, assinine idea to come out of the network's backside since, oh, say, Homeboys from Outer Space) do? They schedule the only show (since the departure of Buffy the Vampire Slayer) that has not gotten attention that's been totally ridicule-based against a well-established hit show. Good one, UPN. Here's another bullet so you can load up and shoot yourself in the other foot.

I'm telling you, if Rick Berman and Brannon Braga, UPN, and the rest of those misfits don't get their heads either out of the clouds or out of their butts, we're going to see the end of Star Trek whether we want to or not. This season had better knock our damn socks off, and make the critics look like fools for lambasting it, or we're going to be waving bye-bye for good to the Enterprise and its crew, come May of 2004.
