Wackier=better?

Superficially, this actually sounds interesting. As award-winning and slick as it may be, Trek often has a very conservative feel to it, in contrast with shows like 'Farscape' and movies which are far more 'out there.' It starts from the play-it-safe scripts and trickles on down. I'm not saying everyone from now on must wear catsuits or strip off their shirts or that Braga should have license to commision 'Threshold 2,' (his wacky ideas for space that turns people inside out has me worried), but there seems to be little to lose by playing up the whimsy. The characters still talk in a precise, stylized and well-rehearsed manner which undermines any welcome surprises a little daring and a looser stanglehold on the show's aesthetics and characterizations might allow. Trek fans may make a stink about every detail from idea to execution and only grudgingly accept some of them after time, but we're still sci-fi fans and our expectations of what is off-puttingly wacky are pretty hard to throw off balance, so long as there's something tangibly believable at its core, be it an earnest desire to push boundaries or just an infectious desire to have some fun. Star Wars has millions more fans who accept far more outlandish ideas and creatures than Trek dips its hand in - I see no harm in exploring the less conservative side of sci fi. Don't screw up continuity anymore, but feel free to loosen things up - I do believe that's what we were promised two years ago. Notwithstanding some gel rub downs, pockets and low-tier swear words, I think we're still waiting for the real fun to begin!
