Oct 14Variety reports that despite heated assurances to the contrary, Sumner Redstone continues to whittle down his stakes in Viacom and CBS, announcing Wednesday plans to sell another big chunk of stock to settle his debt with banks.Redstone had hoped that a sale of National Amusements movie theaters could bring in enough cash to satisfy creditors of his family holding company, also called National Amusements. The chain has been on the block for months. NAI will keep control of both Viacom and CBS, and said it won't sell any more shares. "As a result of our actions, National Amusements will be out of debt with its existing creditors and will still control its most important assets," said Redstone, who is chairman of both Viacom and CBS, in a statement. The latest move calls for NAI to sell all of its 16.3 million shares of Viacom Class B stock -- about 3% of the total Class B shares outstanding. It will sell additional shares of Class A stock, but only after they are converted to Class B stock on a one-for-one basis. After the sale, NAI will retain in excess of 75% of the voting control of each company.0

Oct 13Paramount Pictures is in negotiations with director D.J. Caruso (Eagle Eye, Disturbia) and actor Chris Pine (Star Trek) to make The Art of Making Money early next year, says Variety. Brian Robbins is producing with Sharla Sumpter and Brad Weston. Frank Baldwin wrote the script. Pine would play Art Williams, the alias for a Chicago man who rose from petty theft to become a master counterfeiter. Paramount acquired the project based on a 2005 Rolling Stone article by Jason Kersten, who turned his reporting into the book "The Art of Making Money: The Story of a Master Counterfeiter.0
Oct 13Variety says that Paramount has acquired an untitled feature pitch from screenwriters Aline Brosh McKenna and Simon Kinberg. J.J. Abrams will produce with Bryan Burk through their Bad Robot. Sherryl Clark, Bad Robot's film chief, will executive produce. Lindsay Paulson is an associate producer. The trade says that neither Paramount nor Bad Robot would disclose the plot. "These two writers couldn't be more different. The genres they write seem almost diametrically opposed," Abrams said. "But they came to Bad Robot with a pitch that got us salivating."

Sep 13Manchester Starfleet, the Star Trek fan club based in Manchester, England was first formed back in the late 80s when the popularity with the Star Trek movies and Star Trek: The Next Generation meant than Trek fandom was steadily building momentum. During its peak, the club had over 200 members from the North West alone and always saw a great turn out at their monthly meetings held in Manchester City Centre. However sadly, just like the world of Trek, the club faded away just after the turn of the century. Now, a small group of devoted fans have decided the time is right and after nearly 10 years, Manchester Starfleet is once again boldly going. Ever since May 2009 when the Star Trek movie came to the big screens, this group of 8 fans have met regularly every 3rd Saturday at the Hilton in Manchester. The Trek related stories and articles on the club's website at www.manchesterstarfleet.co.uk have started to gain increased interest from fans from not only the North West of England but from around the world and the number of fans at their monthly meet ups are beginning to grow. The Captain of Manchester Starfleet, Simon Hodgkinson said "As soon as we started the website, a lot of avid Trek fans in the UK contacted us to say that they felt there was hardly any Star Trek fan clubs left in the UK anymore and even less where they could actually go to chat and make new like-minded friends. We really want our monthly meetings to be open to everyone, from casual viewers of Star Trek to die-hard fans, from old to young, where you can make new friends and of course most importantly, to have fun" To register as a member or to find out more about the club or the regular monthly meetings, check out the website at www.manchesterstarfleet.co.uk or email simon@manchesterstarfleet.co.uk.0

Sep 11Comics Review : Star Trek Nero Issue 20
Sep 11If you've been keeping up with the Star Trek Online team's "Path to 2409" series, you'll be happy to know two additions have been published this week. The first is a supplemental log from 2391 that contains an excerpt from a classified report from Lieutenant Mark Fischer, a Federation Operative placed with the troops of the exiled Romulan Commander Sela. According to the report, Sela hasn't given up on taking over the Romulan Empire. The second update focuses on events that occurred in the year 2392. According to the article, "news of the race for Federation President dominates news nets for much of the year." Ultimately, Aennik Okeg becomes the first Saurian ever to hold the Federation presidency.0
