Bryan Burk Says They are Talking About Star Trek XIII, Says the 50th Anniversary in 2016 is Going to be a Big Year to Celebrate

Digital Spy posted an interview with Star Trek Into Darkness producer Bryan Burk and here are few excerpts.

You created a new timeline with Star Trek in 2009, will there be a lot of referencing back to the original series and movies for those fans?
"Yes, one of the things is that the movie will always be for Star Trek fans. In the process of all us five producers working together, Roberto Orci and Damon Lindelof, to a slightly lesser extent, are crazy-hardcore Trekkies. They understand the world so we had long conversations where they put things in and would be laughing hysterically. I had no clue why they were! There are tonnes of references and nods."

Given that the Gene Roddenberry series debuted in 1966 and we've just had a huge Bond 50-year anniversary celebration - has Paramount been talking to you about making a 2016 release date for the next Star Trek film?
"We're definitely talking about the next one, but we haven't talked about a release date. We don't want to wait four years, the same amount of time between the last one and this one, but it's going to be a big year to celebrate, hopefully."

So Bad Robot will still be able to balance working on both Star Trek and Star Wars?
"Yeah. Obviously they're completely different universes, they're completely different films. The only thing in common is the word 'Star', which is why we're going to do the Ringo Starr movie as well. We'll corner the market!"

Pay heed to the lessons of Doctor Who | Report this post to moderator

Sad to say, I'm expecting a lot of whining and complaining come 2015-2016 from some Trek fans that no matter what is planned for the 50th, it won't be enough. I'm speaking from experience looking at the reaction to aspects of Doctor Who fandom to this year's 50th anniversary. To some, nothing less than a $200-million SFX film extravaganza featuring every Doctor (even the dead ones) and a full 40-episode season to boot is enough to satisfy them. In reality, the ongoing 7th revival season which resumes at the end of March has celebrated the history of Doctor Who with almost every episode and is expected to do so for its remainder; a 50th anniversary special story to air in 3D is being filmed later this month; a making-of docu-drama has been filmed recreating the early days of Doctor Who production; a number of lost stories are being released to DVD having been re-created using animation; there are year-long audio and comic strip arcs underway; and a bunch of long out-of-print novels are being reissued. And that's just a sampling - but for some nothing seems good enough or extensive enough. Expect the same when Trek's 50th comes along.

(And just so I don't seem to be picking on Whovians, I just read a thread over on one of the major James Bond fan forums where they're bitching that the Oscars didn't do enough to honor the Bond films' 50th anniversary, with some basically expecting the entire ceremony to have been dedicated to Bond... so I think this sense of entitlement is pretty much a common thread across all these major anniversaries. My opinion - just be happy with what you get and cross your fingers that Shatner and Nimoy, both of whom will be in their mid-80s come 2016, will still be able to share it with us).

Can we get a nice heartwarming scene with Shatner and Nimoy for the 50th anniversary?
