I call bullshit on Burton's assertions.

"The future will be a technetronic control grid, governed by an elite not subject to traditional values." - Zbigniew Brzezinski, Between Two Ages: America's Role in the Technetronic Era (1970).
He's probably just over reacting to a misquote -- or some of the nonsense our lunatic fringe keeps spewing.
I heard Abrams speak at a technology conference a few years ago. He didn't say much about Star Trek but he was respectful of what came before. I think that's why he wasted so much narrative time in ST09 establishing his universe as separate from the original stories. In a sense, he found an in-story way to protect what came before. Even B4.
It's high time someone from Trek started calling bull on Abrams' reboot.
Im almost certain that Abrams or his "camp" are astute enough not to brag that they are erasing everything that came before. But I think Burton is reacting to some of their Hubris.
I too am disquieted by some of the things I am hearing out of JJ world. Most recently Abrams said that his movie won't really have the time to build a romance between Kirk and (insert spoiled character name here) becasue, well, his movie is just too fast paced for that kind of stuff. Really, you cant pause the action for a few 4-minmute scenes? This is the same mentality that said, we dont really have time to develop the experienced careares of any of our characters in the first movie becasue it would screw up the fast pace of the action.
Shatner said it best, and a bit more tactfully than Burton. Abrams is making Star Trek thrill rides. That's fine, but it is only a a tenth of what Star Trek can do.

I seriously doubt JJ Abrams EVER said that--it in no way matches anything he's ever said in any interview.

When did Abrams ever say this? I know Gustavo probably tripped over himself to post this article, but honestly.. can we see some citation to a past quote where J.J. Abrams EVER said such a thing? Honestly, this feels like an interview made up by a troll to make a slow news day more interesting.

"If a sixth Star Trek television series is ever realized, it will be set in the new universe." -- cdydatzigs, June 15, 2009.
there goes the call for civility.
As the memory of TNG is quickly fading and a lot of fans are saying "Picard who?", you can expect more of these reactions. You can expect more of these statements from faithful TNG fans and actors involved in the TNG franchise.
The cycle of life is a terrible thing. I remember when TNG came out and TOS fans who tried to cling on to their traditions were dismissedas old fuddy duddies who supported a cheesy old TV series that had poor special effects and did not age well.
Actually, didn't that first appear on The Animated Series, almost a decade and a half BEFORE The Next Generation?
I've not heard anything of the kind out of Abrams or anyone from his camp. If he said anything close to what Burton asserts, it would certainly be inappropriate. However, I'm calling B.S. on there being any validity to what he's "heard". I wouldn't be surprised if Burton eventually makes it known that he was taken out of context or flat out apologizes for what he said based on bad information, etc. etc...
You have to admit. On the surface, this sounds pretty unbelievable. It's coming from left field. Besides, do people really say stuff like this? It makes Abrams out to be some sort of nefarious caricature of a b-movie bad guy.
But I do not remember Abrams ever saying "our Trek should be the only one." What is Burton smoking now?
BUT: there were LOTS of breaks with continuity with the 2009 movie. Too many. It would have been better to just reboot and call it a day.
Will the Abrams supporters go into full attack mode?
Burton is expressing an opinion that is quite valid.
That said, I don't know if I ever read that Abrams or anyone in his camp wanted to be remembered as the only Trek.
I could be wrong, but I never saw any quote of the sort.
