Star Trek Make-Up Master Michael Westmore Says J.J. Abrams Trek Reboot is Taking Steps Away from Gene Roddenberry

By GustavoLeao / 03:51, 27 February 2013 / Star Trek: Nemesis

EW posted an extensive interview with former Star Trek make-up artist Michael Westmore and here are excerpts.

Before you started working on Star Trek, were you a Trekkie?
Marion and I, we’ve been married going on 48 years this year. When Star Trek came on the air, and she was pregnant with Michael, my oldest son, and it was Thursday nights, and it had reached that period in pregnancy where you just don’t want to move. So we stayed home and that was one of those shows that you tune in just because you like it, and yes, we did. We watched all the episodes starting back in ’66.

What do you think of the J.J. Abrams reboot?
They’re doing a good job. It’s popular. It’s making money. In the 18 years that I was on it, we always kind of stayed to a directive of Gene Roddenberry. And it seems like they’re taking steps away from it, almost like they want to create a new wheel. And Star Trek has so many dedicated fans and so much background to it, it’s difficult to throw something at it to try to change something classic. But [Abrams] has his Vulcans, and eventually he’ll probably come up and have Klingons one of these days. But I enjoyed the movie. It had a lot of action to it. And they did really nice casting too where you believed these people. And he’s got a lot more technology to work with now too. And, I must say, a lot more money. It makes a big difference. You can afford to have not one laser shot but 20 laser shots. There’s a lot more movement, a lot more action going on in his films just because of having larger budges to work with.

I'm pretty tired of the whole 'It's not Gene's Star Trek'. I'm one who thinks that's a good thing. I'm not saying they should abandon the concepts he infused the show with. But the material had to evolve, particularly on the big screen, if the franchise was going to be successful going forward.

I'm not trying to poop on anyone who doesn't like JJ Trek. That's your opinion and I respect it. I just don't like it when someone evokes Roddenberry's vision as what's missing. 1. It's not like Berman & co. didn't stray, they did plenty of times.. it's just conveneient that guys like Westmore think what they did is acceptable, and JJ's didn't. 2. Trek's biggest problem was that it had become stale, and there was no influence much beyond the fan base that already gets Roddenberry's vision. What good is the show really doing if no one is really watching? 3. It wasn't really good at tackling big issues anyway. All the social tenets that Roddenberry wanted to tackle had really already been done on TV and movies.

It was time to move on.

Roddenberry provided the foundation, and each iteration has evolved with the times, and JJ's is no different. Again, if you don't like Trek '09, that's completely cool with me... but clinging to a 'Roddenberry vision' that isn't a relevant storytelling tool anymore isn't going to be viable for the franchise.

Part of the success of Star Trek from 1987-2005 came from Michael Westmore's work. I can't imagine creating such elaborate, creative, and memorable aliens week after week. We are lucky to have had him.

That said, I wonder what his true feelings were about the 2009 movie's make-up. I thought the make-up was pretty good. The Vulcans looked great. I am a little conerned about the upcoming Klingons. I kind of hope that the new Klingons keep their helmets on the whole time just to avoid any controversy.
