TrekWeb interviews actor Chris Doohan, son of legendary actor James Doohan. Chris is playing Montgomery Scott on the web series Star Trek Continues, Interview : Gustavo Leao

1- Chris, how does it feel to continue the Doohan legacy and play
Montgomery Scott in the web series Star Trek Continues ?

It feels great, although I did have reservations at first. I mean,
those are pretty big shoes to fill. I wasn’t sure how the Star Trek
fans would feel about me playing Scotty, but after releasing the three
vignettes, the fan response was overwhelmingly supportive and
positive. Playing Scotty feels very natural to me now.

2- For you, what is the appeal of Star Trek Continues ?

Well, there are a couple reasons why I find it appealing. First, I
always liked the idea of continuing the 5 year mission, whether I was
in it or not. It just seemed like it was the right thing to do. Also,
I was convinced that this team headed by Vic Mignogna had the right
stuff. They filmed it in the original format, the lighting was spot on
and the sets are incredible. Every aspect of this series is recreated
to be as close as the original.

3- How does it feel to be "back" on the Enterprise bridge as Scotty
?

I must say, the first time I entered the bridge and sat in Scotty’s
chair was a completely surreal moment for me. I couldn’t believe I was
doing (and seeing) the same thing my dad did way back then. I never
thought I would ever be doing something like this.

4- What is your opinion of actor Simon Pegg as Scotty, having worked
with him in the new Star Trek movies ?

Simon is incredible, not only as Scotty, but as a person. He is one
of the most generous and humble earthlings that I have ever
encountered. We had a lot of time to chat during the filming of Star
Trek 2009 and I found him to be a very down to earth kind of guy. He
was kind enough to invite my wife and I to the star studded premiere
and even a couple after parties. Actually, if it wasn’t for him, I
would likely not have a part in Star Trek Into Darkness.

5- Do you feel Star Trek Continues captures the essence of The Original Series ?

I believe it does. There have been several web series out there that
do a great job, but I feel that Star Trek Continues goes the extra
mile. Many of the people who have seen our vignettes say “It’s so Star
Trek”. I’m sure this will end up on our T-shirts.

6- Finally Chris send a message to the fans about Star Trek Continues
and your future projects.

I can’t wait for all of you to see our first episode, Pilgrim of
Eternity. We are filming our second episode this October and it
promises to be just as good. We have amazing Writers involved in this
project and I’m sure you won’t be disappointed.

I'm glad Chris Doohan was in the new movies. But Simon Pegg, as cool and nice a guy he is, cannot hold a candle to James Doohan's Scotty. Of all the casting of the new movie, this was the only one that did not work. And that sucks for me, since the orignal Scotty was the inspiration for me to major in physics. I just watched the TNG episode "Relics" last night and was reminded how awesome Scotty is SUPPOSED to be: loyal, hard-working, creative, a "miracle worker." I just could not see Simon Pegg do that.
