Jonathan Frakes Says He, Shatner and Singer Were All Turned Down When They Pitched a New Star Trek TV Series

Features

By GustavoLeao / 17:30, 22 February 2013 / Star Trek: Nemesis

According to The Mary Sue, at the TNG reunion at the recent Grand Slam XVIII convention, when asked whether Star Trek would ever come back to television, Jonathan Frakes answered that not only he, but also William Shatner and Bryan Singer, had pitched a new Star Trek series to Paramount. They were all turned down. The studio apparently doesn't want to shift focus away from the current film series—which Frakes loves.

The full report is here.

Good. While I do miss having new Trek on TV, I'd prefer them to focus on what they're currently doing with the franchise, namely Bad Robot's movies and the HD restorations of the past shows. A new show can come later.

Could you imagine if in the Marvel Universe they were trying to maintain movie franchises of different eras -- say, Captain America in one and Iron Man in another? Or Spider Man and Iron Man (same earth, but not crossing over)?

What a mistake that would be... (RIIIIIIGHT).

Come on, Paramount: Let loose a Picard movie, or a 24th century Trek film. And how about a new series to boot?

I predict that Star Trek will be back on TV in 2016. When Bob Orci was asked this on the radio by a really amazing, intelligent, good-looking guy, Orci stated that there is sort-of custody battle over Star Trek between Paramount and CBS. CBS has the TV rights while Paramount has film rights. If CBS really wanted to make a Trek TV show they would not need Paramount's permission. But, Para does have some say if they wish to produce it in their studios and resources. So, it's complicated, but do-able.

Orci did also say that there exists the possibity of an animated show, which I would be very in favor of.

I do want Star Trek on TV, but it's better to wait until Orci's third Trek movie to be released in 2016.
